A new device to stabilize templates for transperineal I-125 implants.

Transperineal Iodine-125 implants of the prostate are currently being performed at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with CT-based treatment planning and transrectal ultrasound for verification of proper needle placement in the prostate at the time of implantation. An adjustable device, the WIPI, has been designed to stabilize the perineal template and rectal obturator during planning and implementation of the procedure. The device is simple to use and is compatible with CT scanning, transrectal ultrasound, and the Mick applicator. Its design and key functional features are described here.

An improved method for computerized tomography-planned transperineal 125iodine prostate implants.

Transperineal 125iodine implants of the prostate can be performed with ultrasound guidance, a simple technique that has met with widespread acceptance. However, ultrasound does not allow good visualization of the pubic bones in relation to the pelvic outlet, and the pubic bones may interfere with needle placement in the anterior peripheral aspect of the prostate. Adequate irradiation of the entire periphery of the prostate is important to assure tumor control, since most tumors are multicentric and may involve the anterior aspect of the prostate. A computerized tomography-based treatment planning procedure that allows for angulation of transperineal needles to avoid the pubic bones and still reaches the most peripheral aspects of the gland is described. The technique also allows for the use of transrectal ultrasound and fluoroscopy to verify correct needle placement in the prostate at the procedure. Early treatment results, based on prostate specific antigen and regression of palpable tumors, are encouraging.

Iodine 125 brachytherapy for early stage prostate cancer: new techniques may achieve better results.

Radioactive implants have been used extensively for treatment of early stage prostate cancer. In general, their use has been associated with fewer side effects than surgery or external beam irradiation. Local control, for the most part, has been comparable to that achieved with the other modalities. Lower tumor control rates in some early series probably were related to inaccurate or inconsistent placement of radioactive pellets, since the older procedures were subject to substantial operator error. Newer transperineal techniques, guided by transrectal ultrasound or CT scanning, have provided increased accuracy of seed placement. Early results with the newer techniques are promising.

Adriamycin resistance, heat resistance and radiation response in Chinese hamster fibroblasts.

We have investigated the effect of heat, radiation or Adriamycin (ADR) on Chinese hamster fibroblasts (HA-1), their heat resistant variants, and their ADR resistant variants. Heat or ADR resistance did not confer cross resistance to radiation. Cells resistant to heat did show cross resistance to ADR. Cells selected for ADR resistance were not cross resistant to heat and they did not exhibit drug potentiation by hyperthermia, characteristic of ADR sensitive cells. Cytofluorometric measurement showed decreased ADR uptake in both heat and ADR resistant cells. The possibility of cross resistance between heat and ADR should be considered when designing treatment protocols involving combined modality trials.

[Can musical feeling be measured? (author's transl)].

The sensation of music as a pure mental reaction is not to be maintained. Some decades ago the research work of music has been concentrated in the different branches of science. Already, the results are astonishing. Since two years, on the psychophysiological department of the "Psychological Institute of the Scientific Faculty" of the "University of Salzburg" investigations are continued to find a possible connection between the sensation of music and the laterality of the bioelectric activity of the brain. We pointed out the following results: there are great differences in the amplitudes and frequencies (in the fronto-temporale lobes) of the evoked responses between musicians and nonmusicians. While musicians show higher amplitudes and lower frequencies in the evoked potentials, nonmusicians show lower amplitudes and higher frequencies. Another astonishing cognition is that the musicians who have been requested to structure the music without any emotion show lower amplitudes like the nonmusicians, but no increase in the frequency like them. Thus we can say that musicality, that means the different impressions of music shows an effect in the evoked responses.
