Bullous erythema multiforme following herpes zoster and varicella-zoster virus infection.

Four cases of herpes zoster-induced bullous erythema multiforme (EM) are reported. Three patients presented with widespread skin lesions 10 to 14 days after an episode of thoracic herpes zoster. In these patients a high increase in varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antibody titer was detected, indicating secondary VZV infection. Histologic examinations of skin biopsy from a patient with widespread lesions (case 4) revealed a mixture of EM, toxic epidermal necrolysis and herpetic virus infection. VZV should be included in the list of infectious agents able to trigger EM and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Decrease in rabbit bladder mucosal glycoprotein after oophorectomy.

Hormonal manipulation has been shown to result in less efficient bladder clearance of bacteria. We describe the use of a double antibody technique to semiquantitatively demonstrate the diminution of bladder glycoproteins from the transitional epithelium in oophorectomized rabbits. Rabbit bladder glycoprotein was isolated and used to immunize Swiss-Webster mice. Bladders of normal and oophorectomized rabbits were sequentially stained with mouse antirabbit sera and fluoresceinated goat antimouse antibody. A significant loss of bladder epithelial glycoprotein was evident in oophorectomized rabbits as compared to controls. This study, utilizing a semiquantitative immunologic staining technique, suggests an intact glycoprotein layer is important in the bladder defense mechanism.

Buspirone and diazepam in anxiety: a controlled study.

The anxiolytic properties of buspirone were assessed in a 4-week double-blind study in 240 anxious patients, 81 of whom received buspirone, 81 diazepam, and 78 placebo. Patients were required to have scores greater than or equal to 9 on the Covi and greater than or equal to 18 on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, and to endorse at least 5 items on a 17-item Anxiety Entry Checklist. Among 212 evaluable patients, those who improved most were married, well-educated females who had both a positive family adjustment and a low level of depression. Diazepam produced relatively equal improvement in females and males. Diazepam seems more effective in reducing somatic symptoms, while buspirone appears more effective in reducing symptoms associated with cognitive and interpersonal problems. Main differences between the drugs were seen in side effect profiles.
