Optical properties in nonequilibrium phase transitions.

An open question about the dynamical behavior of materials is how phase transition occurs in highly nonequilibrium systems. One important class of study is the excitation of a solid by an ultrafast, intense laser. The preferential heating of electrons by the laser field gives rise to initial states dominated by hot electrons in a cold lattice. Using a femtosecond laser pump-probe approach, we have followed the temporal evolution of the optical properties of such a system. The results show interesting correlation to nonthermal melting and lattice disordering processes. They also reveal a liquid-plasma transition when the lattice energy density reaches a critical value.

Temperature determination using Kalpha spectra from M -shell Ti ions.

The compact multipulse terawatt (COMET) laser facility at LLNL was used to irradiate Al-coated 2-50 microm Ti foils with approximately 10(19) W cm(-2) , 500 fs, 3-6 J laser pulses. Laser-plasma interactions on the front side of the target generate hot electrons with sufficient energy to excite inner-shell electrons in Ti, creating Kalpha emission which has been measured using a focusing spectrometer with spatial resolution aimed at the back surface of the targets. The spatial extent of the emission varies with target thickness. The high spectral resolution (lambda/Deltalambda approximately equal to 3800) is sufficient to measure broadening of the Kalpha emission feature due to the emergence of blueshifted satellites from ionized Ti in a heated region of the target. A self-consistent-field model is used to spectroscopically diagnose thermal electron temperatures up to 40 eV in the strongly coupled Ti plasmas.

Single-state measurement of electrical conductivity of warm dense gold.

We report on a single-state measurement of electrical conductivity of warm dense gold in the solid to plasma transition regime. This is achieved using the idealized slab plasma approach of isochoric heating of ultrathin samples by a femtosecond laser, coupled with femtosecond probe measurements of reflectivity and transmission. The experiment also reveals the time scale associated with the disassembly of laser heated solid.

X-Ray emission following low-energy charge exchange collisions of highly charged ions

K-shell x-ray emission following low-energy charge exchange collisions ( </=11 eV/amu) has been measured for ten bare and hydrogenic ions up to U91+. The data resolve capture into angular momentum states with l = 1 and provide a stringent test of theory. The assumption of Stark mixing of angular momentum states is inappropriate at such energies. Results from detailed calculations give a better description of the data, but significant discrepancies are noted. The measurements show that the hardness ratio of charge-exchange induced K-shell x-ray emission represents a diagnostic of the dynamics of ion-atom interactions in situations where the energy is below 1 keV/amu, e.g., in solar wind collisions.
