[Control of mitochondrial Mg++-efflux].

Inorganic phosphate stimulates the release of Mg++ from liver mitochondria, depending on concentration; a concentration as low as 0.1 mM phosphate is already effective. The process is dependent on the electron transfer of the respiratory chain, and its rate is highest under conditions of endogenous respiration and with ascorbate and TMPD as substrates, respectively. The phosphate stimulated release of Mg++ is followed, with a pronounced delay, by a Ca++ efflux and a swelling of mitochondria. Addition of EGTA strongly reduced the rate of Mg++ liberation in the presence and absence of inorganic phosphate. Exogenous Ca++ is able to abolish the EGTA effect. ADP and ATP inhibit the phosphate stimulated release of Mg++. Phosphoenol pyruvate and free fatty acids enhance the rate of Mg++ and Ca++ efflux from the mitochondria. The results permit the conclusion that inorganic phosphate, Ca++ and various metabolites of the cell metabolism influence the Mg++ distribution between the extra- and intramitochondrial space, thus controlling the permeability of the mitochondrial inner membrane for monovalent cations.

[Steroid-examinations in serum of old men as a functional testing of the suprarenal glands (author's transl)].

A surgical intervention is dangerous for the old patient awing to the reduced reactiveness and polymorbity. The knowledge of the function of the suprarenal glands in stress (operation) is important. The latent insufficiency of the suprarenal glands is determined with the ACTH-stimulations test. 136 patients from 60 to 100 years were proved. In the case of a latent insufficiency of the suprarenal glands the substitution of glucocorticoids and ACTH is necessary.

[Cis-polyenecarboxylic acids and other fat-metabolism parameters in carcinoma of the digestive tract].

In 24 patients with a neoplasm of the gastro-intestinal tract cis-poly-unsaturated fatty acids were determined in the serum together with cholesterol, free and total glycerin as well as with neutral fats. In the cis-polyene acids a statistically ascertained diminution occurs, all the other parameters remain practically unchanged. To what extent very low values of poly-unsaturated fatty acids are to be connected must still be tested. It cannot be judged about a correlation of cancer and values of neutral fats, since the breadth of the normal area of this parameter of fatty metabolism is very large and the number of test persons is relatively small. The content of cholesterol of patients with cancer is prettily constant and deviated only little from the normal.

[Ion concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid in multiple sclerosis].

The concentrations of electrolytes Na, K, Ca, Mg, and Cl and trace elements Cu and Zn were determined in the lumbar cerebrospinal fluids of forty patients with multiple sclerosis. Metal ion concentrations were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy and flame photometry, respectively. Compared with corresponding values obtained from a control group, statistically significant increases in concentration of Na, Cl, Ca, and Zn have been found. Also reported are the results of determinations of ion concentrations in cerebrospinal fluids obtained from patients suffering from diseases other than multiple sclerosis. Possible causes of deviations from the norm are discussed.
