A case report of rectal schwannoma.

We experienced a case of rectal schwannoma which was diagnosed before surgery. In this paper we have described this rare case and have discussed a number of similar cases reported in the literature.

Two laparoscopic techniques for resection of leiomyoma in the stomach.

We report two surgical treatments by laparoscopic techniques of a leiomyoma in the stomach, each for one patient. The patients, one a 59-year-old man and the other a 28-year-old woman, were found to have an asymptomatic submucosal tumor in the stomach in an annual medical screening. One tumor, 1.5 cm in maximum diameter, was located on the anterior wall of the gastric body and was excised extracorporeally by laparoscopy-guided surgery. The other was 1.9 cm in maximum diameter, on the anterior wall of the antrum, and was excised intracorporeally using only laparoscopic surgery. Their postoperative courses were uneventful. They drank clear liquid after the removal of a nasogastric tube on the first postoperative day and had a solid meal on the second postoperative day. They were discharged from the hospital on the seventh and eighth postoperative days.

[A polypoidal adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus with a pseudosarcomatous stromal reaction].

A case of a polypoidal carcinoma with a pseudosarcomatous stromal reaction is presented. Histologically, the polypoidal tumor of the lower esophagus was revealed to be an adenosquamous cell carcinoma associated with the proliferation of atypical stromal cells, osteoclastic-like giant cells, and histiocytes. Using an immunohistochemical stain, these stromal atypical cells were found to be positive for vimentin, with some cells positive for alpha 1-antichymotrypsin. However these atypical cells proved negative as epithelial markers (keratin and EMA). Thus, it was felt that such atypical stromal cells may be a reactive proliferation of the stromal cells to an adenosquamous cell carcinoma.

Leiomyosarcoma of the breast--a case report and an electron microscopic study.

We treated a fifty six-year-old woman with leiomyosarcoma of the breast. Light microscopy showed typical findings of leiomyosarcoma and electron microscopy confirmed the smooth muscle origin of the tumor. The patient is well without evidence of metastases or local recurrence of the tumor fifty-five months after radical mastectomy.

Experimental production of portal hypertension in dogs by a whole liver compression.

In spite of many attempts to produce an experimental model for studying the pathogenesis and the pathophysiology of portal hypertension and esophageal varices, satisfactory results have not been reported. Since most attempts involved multiple operations or complicated surgical maneuvers to achieve portal hypertension, experimental animals could not survive easily. This new procedure requires only a simple operation, so experimental animal survival is high. The portal venous pressure can be raised immediately by increasing intrahepatic vascular resistance. This is done by wrapping and compressing the whole liver with polypropylene mesh, which also prevents the development of hepatopetal collaterals. The experimental production of portal hypertension in fifteen dogs resulted in only one death. The remaining fourteen dogs were in good condition for nine weeks after the operation and were maintaining elevated ranges of portal pressure with an average of 326 mmH2O. Varying degrees of esophageal venous dilatation were evident. Based on the results, this newly developed method seems to be useful for studying the pathophysiology of the portal hypertension and esophageal varices.
