[A metal-ceramic composite endoprosthesis for total hip replacement (author's transl)].

A total hip endoprosthesis of our own conception is described. The implantation is done partially without bone cement. The socket and the head are made of alumina whereas the femoral component is of metal. Bone cement is used only for implantation of the shaft. 17 patients on whom operations were performed more than 6 months previously were followed up. The preliminary results are satisfactory. In particular, there were no signs of loosening of the socket. Therefore, this prosthesis is considered to be one step towards a total hip endoprothesis for implantation without bone cement.

[Problems of hip arthrodesis (author's transl)].

A follow-up study of 84 hip arthrodesis is reported. Four methods of arthrodesis were applied: nailblock arthrodesis, double-nail, cross-plate and screw arthrodesis. Double-nail arthroplasty was abandoned in favour of total hip arthroplasty. Moreover application of the screw was given up on account of relatively bad results. Nail-block and cross-plate arthrodesis, when indicated, are still very valuable therapeutic methods, especially in the case of patients who are too young for a total hip arthroplasty and who are still actively working. The influence of an arthrodesized hip on the knee joint and lumbar spine are examined and discussed.

[Ultrasound diagnosis in bone and soft tissue tumors (author's transl)].

The value of ultrasound diagnosis as an additional examination to x-ray and angiography is proved in various tumors and tumor like conditions of the locomotor system. It shows that the echotomogramms are helpful in various cases. This help results mainly in a better preoperative diagnosis of tumor size and topography and in some cases in the cognition of tumor structures. Therefore, this method can be a valuable information for surgery. In some cases the finding of soft tissue tumors is possible even when the x-ray and angiography do not give any information. In the search for tumor recurrence the ultrasound can also be applied.

[Pitfalls of statistics as shown in a study on dysplastic hips (author's transl)].

In 97 cases of randomly selected children of an age from 5 to 16 weeks the angles of Hilgenreiner are determined. In relation to these findings also the influence of various factors such as hereditary anamnesis and untimely birth are observed. The so found data are compared with those published from Tönnis and Brunken. It seems that their data are higher than those in an average population. The necessity of an exact random test is pointed out.

Further experimental and clinical experience with aluminum oxide endoprostheses.

This paper describes the design principles of a new endoprosthesis made of dense aluminum oxide (A12O3) and implanted without bone cement. Mechanical tests and animal experiments have proved the sufficient mechanical strength of the bone-prosthesis connection as well as the biocompatibility of the material. So far, 12 tumor patients selected according to strict indication criteria have been operated on. Both the clinical-radiologic and the first histological findings available are encouraging. Special reference is made to the first fully ceramic total hip joint endoprostheses implanted in a human without bone cement.
