Because the complications of decreased bone mineral density, such as femoral neck fractures and severe spinal deformities, have a strong impact on daily life, prevention has become more important than therapy. The present study included as subjects 771 women residing in Innoshima City, Sera-gun, and Mihara City, all in Hiroshima Prefecture. We determined bone mineral density in the lumbar spine and femoral neck of these women, measured their height and weight, and examined the effect of age and body mass index (BMI) on bone density rate (YAM%). The subjects of the study were all volunteers. As no significant difference could be demonstrated in comparison with the results of the 1998 National Nutrition Survey of height, body weight, and BMI, we considered there would be no problem in extrapolating the results of the present determinations to middle-aged and elderly women. In the relationship between age and YAM%, a negative trend was observed prior to menopause, but was not significant. After menopause, however, a significant negative correlation was demonstrated. In addition, a significant positive correlation was observed between BMI and age-corrected YAM% for the lumbar spine and femoral neck. In future studies, the YAM% of the lumbar spine and femoral neck corrected for age and BMI should be investigated to determine the influence of lifestyle.
The purpose of this study is to examine an antialiasing method in the breath-hold coronal imaging of the thorax or abdomen. This paper reports a new method of preventing the aliasing artifacts of arms using "Hertz II" as a electromagnetic-wave shield fabric (ESF),which is a very thin and flexible special synthetic fabric. In this study, the ESF method was compared with various conventional preventive measures. Temperature changed around the ESF was also measured by using a fiber optic temperature measurement system during the MR scanning procedure. In addition, the ESF method was tried to use for scanning with some volunteers and some patients in clinical examinations. The results of this study showed that the ESF method could efficiently prevent the aliasing of arms in the MR images. Furthermore, safety of the subjects was hardly affected by the ESF method during MR imaging. Therefore, we concluded that the ESF method was an effectual antialiasing method in the imaging of the thorax or abdomen by using the fast breath-hold scanning.
Three-dimensional CT angiography (3 D-CTA) has become a modality of choice for the evaluation of the lesions and diseases of central nervous system. Further enhancement of diagnostic capability has been achieved by the development and introduction of multislice CT, which enabled us to obtain true isotrophic volumetric data. Most proven application of 3 D-CTA in CNS is the diagnosis and management of cerebral aneurysms. It can be used as an alternative to conventional angiography in most of cases. Other promising applications of 3 D-CTA are, pre-surgical evaluation of arteriovenous malformations, diagnosis of ischemic diseases, and evaluation of neck artery.
Electrocardiographically (ECG) gated multisection helical CT images were obtained in 23 patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms. 4D-CTA (3D CT angiography plus phase data) images were generated by ECG-gated reconstruction. Four patients showed pulsation of an aneurysmal bleb. Clipping was performed in two of these patients, and the rupture site matched the pulsatile bleb seen in 4D-CTA.
