Discrimination of poly(vinyl chloride) samples with different plasticizers and prediction of plasticizer contents in poly(vinyl chloride) using near-infrared spectroscopy and neural-network analysis.

In the recycling of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), it is required to discriminate every plasticizer for quality control. For this purpose, the near-infrared spectra were measured for 41 kinds of PVC samples with different plasticizers (DINP, DOP, DOA, TOTM and Polyester) and different plasticizer contents (0-49%). A neural-network analysis was applied to the near-infrared spectra pretreated by second-derivative processing. They were discriminated from one another. The neural-network analysis also allowed us to propose a calibration model which predicts the contents of plasticizers in PVC. The correlation coefficient (R) and the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) for the DINP calibration model were found to be 0.999 and 0.41 wt%, respectively. In comparison, a partial least-squares regression analysis was carried out. The R and RMSEP of the DINP calibration model were calculated to be 0.993 and 1.27 wt%, respectively. It is found that a near-infrared spectra measurement combined with a neural-network analysis is useful for plastic recycling.

A novel parallel algorithm for large-scale Fock matrix construction with small locally distributed memory architectures: RT parallel algorithm.

We developed a novel parallel algorithm for large-scale Fock matrix calculation with small locally distributed memory architectures, and named it the "RT parallel algorithm." The RT parallel algorithm actively involves the concept of integral screening, which is indispensable for reduction of computing times with large-scale biological molecules. The primary characteristic of this algorithm is parallel efficiency, which is achieved by well-balanced reduction of both communicating and computing volume. Only the density matrix data necessary for Fock matrix calculations are communicated, and the data once communicated are reutilized for calculations as many times as possible. The RT parallel algorithm is a scalable method because required memory volume does not depend on the number of basis functions. This algorithm automatically includes a partial summing technique that is indispensable for maintaining computing accuracy, and can also include some conventional methods to reduce calculation times. In our analysis, the RT parallel algorithm had better performance than other methods for massively parallel processors. The RT parallel algorithm is most suitable for massively parallel and distributed Fock matrix calculations for large-scale biological molecules with more than thousands of basis functions.

Origin of attraction and directionality of the pi/pi interaction: model chemistry calculations of benzene dimer interaction.

A model chemistry for the evaluation of intermolecular interaction between aromatic molecules (AIMI Model) has been developed. The CCSD(T) interaction energy at the basis set limit has been estimated from the MP2 interaction energy near the basis set limit and the CCSD(T) correction term obtained by using a medium size basis set. The calculated interaction energies of the parallel, T-shaped,and slipped-parallel benzene dimers are -1.48, -2.46, and -2.48 kcal/mol, respectively. The substantial attractive interaction in benzene dimer, even where the molecules are well separated, shows that the major source of attraction is not short-range interactions such as charge-transfer but long-range interactions such as electrostatic and dispersion. The inclusion of electron correlation increases attraction significantly. The dispersion interaction is found to be the major source of attraction in the benzene dimer. The orientation dependence of the dimer interaction is mainly controlled by long-range interactions. Although electrostatic interaction is considerably weaker than dispersion interaction, it is highly orientation dependent. Dispersion and electrostatic interactions are both important for the directionality of the benzene dimer interaction.

Electrostatic Interactions That Determine the Rate of Pseudorotation Processes in Oxyphosphorane Intermediates: Implications with Respect to the Roles of Metal Ions in the Enzymatic Cleavage of RNA.

The enzymatic cleavage of RNA takes place via a cyclic pentacoordinate oxyphosphorane intermediate/transition state. We carried out ab initio investigations on the neutral cyclic oxyphosphorane, which exists as a stable intermediate. As a consequence of the conformational preferences of the pentacoordinate trigonal bipyramidal intermediates, the rotation of the P-OH bonds is strongly coupled with the reaction coordinate for the pseudorotation process. In addition, the neutral PF(4)OH species has a higher barrier to pseudorotation than the corresponding anionic species PF(4)O(-). These findings are related to the positive charge of the hydrogen atoms on the equatorial oxygens in the trigonal bipyramidal structures: the hydrogen atoms preferably adopt eclipsed positions relative to the axial ligands. Fixing the cationic species in these regions causes an increase in the barrier heights for pseudorotation processes and, thus, prevents isomerization by pseudorotation. Consequently, metal coordination in the double-metal ion mechanism for enzymatic cleavage of RNA should serve to exclusively stabilize the trigonal bipyramidal intermediate/transition state for the in-line attack and departure process.
