Vibronic coupling in benzene cation and anion: vibronic coupling and frontier electron density in Jahn-Teller molecules.

Vibronic coupling constants of Jahn-Teller molecules, benzene radical cation and anion, are computed as matrix elements of the electronic part of the vibronic coupling operator using the electronic wave functions calculated by generalized restricted Hartree-Fock and state-averaged complete active space self-consistent-field methods. The calculated vibronic coupling constants for benzene cation agree well with the experimental and theoretical values. Vibronic coupling density analysis, which illustrates the local properties of the coupling, is performed in order to explain the order of magnitude of the coupling constant from view of the electronic and vibrational structures. This analysis reveals that the couplings of the e2g2 and e2g3 modes in which the large displacements locate on C-C bonds are strong in the cation. On the other hand, they are greatly weakened in the anion because of the decrease of electron density in the region of the C-C bonds, which originates from the antibonding nature of the singly occupied molecular orbital of the anion. However, the difference of the electronic structure has a little influence on the vibronic coupling of the e2g4 mode. These results indicate that the vibronic coupling depends not only on the direction of the nuclear displacement but also on the frontier electron density.

High-spin radical cations of a dendritic oligoarylamine.

A new dendritic oligoarylamine, N,N,N',N',N",N"-hexakis[4-(di-4-anisylamino)phenyl]- 1,3,5-benzenetriamine (BTA) 2, which contains a 1,3,5-benzenetriamine molecular unit as an potential precursor of a high-spin molecule and three oligoarylamine moieties as spin-carrying units surrounding the core BTA, has been prepared by the sequential palladium-catalyzed amination reactions. The redox property has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, and the highly charged states up to the hexacation are accessible to 2. The polycationic high-spin species have been generated by stepwise chemical oxidation, and the electronic structures have been examined in detail by the continuous wave (CW) and pulsed ESR spectroscopy in comparison with the previously studied 1. The pulsed ESR technique enabled us to determine the definite spin multiplicity of the generated polycationic species of 2. It was confirmed that the dominant oxidized species observed by the two- and three-electron oxidations were assigned to the spin triplet 2(2+) and the spin quartet 2(3+), respectively. Moreover, these high-spin polycationic species turned out to be far more stable as compared to 1, and the isolation of 2(3+) as the SbCl(6)(-) salt has been accomplished. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for the 2(3+)(SbCl(6)(-))(3) salt revealed that the intramolecular ferromagnetic interaction exists in 2(3+), and moreover, the trication 2(3+) was found to be deformed in the solid state.

A theoretical study on the third-order nonlinear optical properties of pi-conjugated linear porphyrin arrays.

By using the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) theory, the second hyperpolarizabilities (gamma) have been calculated for various pi-conjugated porphyrin arrays including "porphyrin tapes": the meso-beta doubly linked porphyrin array Dn and the meso-meso, beta-beta, beta-beta triply linked array Tn. The validity of the PPP theory is checked via a comparison with both the ab initio Hartree-Fock and the B3LYP theories in the case of porphyrin monomers and dimers. It is found that Dn and especially Tn exhibit much more remarkable evolution of gamma/n along with an increasing number of porphyrin units n compared with the butadiyne-bridged array, Yn. As a result, the static third-order susceptibilities chi((3)) of Dn and Tn are expected to be 1 and 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of Yn in the limit n --> infinity, and these advantages of porphyrin tapes become more prominent by taking into account geometrical relaxations of porphyrin units in the arrays. The structure-property relationship in various conjugated polymers including porphyrin arrays is interpreted on the basis of the scaling behaviors of chi((1)) and chi((3)) with the effective conjugation length (ECL) as well as the reciprocal HOMO-LUMO energy gap (1/E(g)). In particular, from the master plot of chi((3)) (and even chi((1))) versus 1/E(g), the pi-conjugation of Tn is noted to indeed be exceptional, because its large susceptibilities cannot be expected from the scaling behavior of ordinary one-dimensional conjugated systems. We also point out that the theory of scaling relationship, chi((3)) approximately 1/E(g)(x)(), is significantly improved by taking into account electron-electron interactions based on the comparison with experiments.

Triradical cation of p-phenylenediamine having two nitroxide radical groups: spin alignment mediated by delocalized spin.

The cationic state of a p-phenylenediamine (PDA) molecule having two nitroxide radical groups was prepared and characterized using electrochemical, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic, and absorption spectroscopic methods. The delocalized intervalence state of the p-phenylendiamine (PDA) moiety was detected in the cationic state. From the pulsed ESR measurements, it was confirmed that the delocalized spin induces parallel spin alignment between the localized two nitroxide groups which are magnetically weakly coupled in the neutral state. It was found that the resulting high-spin alignment does not seriously affect the delocalized intervalence state of the PDA radical cation.

Vibronic coupling in cyclopentadienyl radical: a method for calculation of vibronic coupling constant and vibronic coupling density analysis.

A method of calculation of vibronic or electron-phonon coupling constant is presented for a Jahn-Teller molecule, cyclopentadienyl radical. It is pointed out that symmetry breaking at degenerate point and violation of Hellmann-Feynman theorem occur in the calculations based on a single Slater determinant. In order to overcome these difficulties, the electronic wave functions are calculated using generalized restricted Hartree-Fock and complete active space self-consistent-field method and the couplings are computed as matrix elements of the electronic operator of the vibronic coupling. Our result agrees well with the experimental and theoretical values. A concept of vibronic coupling density is proposed in order to explain the order of magnitude of the coupling constant from view of the electronic and vibrational structures. It illustrates the local properties of the coupling and enables us to control the interaction. It could open a way to the engineering of vibronic interactions.

Quantum-chemical investigation of the electroabsorption spectra of directly meso-meso-linked porphyrin arrays: essential role of charge-transfer excited states accidentally overlapping with soret bands.

The electroabsorption (EA) spectra of directly meso-meso-linked porphyrin arrays (Zn, n = 1-3) have been investigated by means of the sum-over-states (SOS) approach at the INDO/S-SCI level theory. The experimental EA spectra of Zn (n > or = 2) exhibit an unusual second-derivative line shape at the exciton split low-energy B(x) band in contrast to the first-derivative spectrum of Z1, which is readily ascribed to a quadratic Stark shift of the B (Soret) band. Although the second-derivative line shape is usually attributed to a difference in the permanent dipole moment (Deltamu) between the ground and excited states, it should be vanishing for Zn due to their essentially D(2)(d) or D(2)(h) symmetry. As pointed out in our previous studies, the interporphyrinic charge-transfer (CT) excited states are accidentally overlapping with the excitonic B bands and the present calculations reveal that the B(x) state is strongly coupled via a transition dipole moment with two such CT states. These situations give rise to a quadratic Stark effect on the B(x) band that is intermediate between Stark shift (first derivative) and Stark broadening (second derivative), and play a central role in establishing the anomalous second derivative nature of the EA spectrum. Moreover, based on the comparison between the theoretical and experimental spectra, there must be an additional factor that further enhances the second derivative nature of the EA spectrum of porphyrin arrays. Discussions on this issue including the preliminary investigations on the role of solvent (PMMA)-induced asymmetry are also presented.

Hydrophobic scale: a second parameter to elucidating various specific ligand-protein interactions.

In the sequence Fourier analysis (SFA) of specific interactions such as those between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs)/FGF receptors (FGFRs), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)/BMP receptors (BMPRs), or tumor repressor protein p53/mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2), the characteristic frequency peak(s) could be observed with the hydrophobic scale for 20 amino acids as well as 4 nucleotides as the physicochemical parameter, but not successfully with the absolute electronegativity scale. This result implies that these two independent scales should be appropriately selected in various specific ligand-protein interactions, though the critical difference has to be determined.

Fine tuning of photophysical properties of meso-meso-linked ZnII-diporphyrins by dihedral angle control.

A series of meso-meso-linked diporphyrins S(n) strapped with a dioxymethylene group of various length were synthesized by intramolecular Ag(I)-promoted coupling of dioxymethylene-bridged diporphyrins B(n), for n=10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Shortening of the strap length causes a gradual decrease in the dihedral angle between the porphyrins and increasing distortion of porphyrin ring, as suggested by MM2 calculations and (1)H NMR studies. This trend has been also suggested by X-ray crystallographic studies on the corresponding Cu(II) complexes of nonstrapped diporphyrin 2 Cu, and strapped diporphyrins S(8)Cu, S(4)Cu, and S(2)Cu. The absorption spectrum of relatively unconstrained diporphyrins S(10) strapped with a long chain exhibits split Soret bands at 414 and 447 nm and weak Q(0,0)- and prominent Q(1,0)-bands, both of which are similar to those of nonstrapped diporphyrin 2. Shortening of the strap length causes systematic changes in the absorption spectra, in which the intensities of the split Soret bands decrease, the absorption bands at about 400 nm and > 460 nm increase in intensity, and a prominent one-band feature of a Q-band is changed to a distinct two-band feature with concurrent progressive red-shifts of the lowest Q(0,0)-band. The fluorescence spectra also exhibit systematic changes, roughly reflecting the changes of the absorption spectra. The strapped diporphyrins S(n) are all chiral and have been separated into enantiomers over a chiral column. The CD spectra of the optically active S(n) display two Cotton effects at 430-450 and at about 400 nm with the opposite signs. The latter effect can be explained in terms of oblique arrangement of m( perpendicular 1) and m( perpendicular 2) dipole moments, while the former effect cannot be accounted for within a framework of the excition coupling theory. The resonance Raman (RR) spectra taken for excitation at 457.9 nm are variable among S(n), while the RR spectra taken for excitation at 488.0 nm are constant throughout the S(n) series. These photophysical properties can be explained in terms of INDO/S-SCI calculations, which have revealed charge transfer (CT) transitions accidentally located close in energy to the excitonic Soret transitions. This feature arises from a close proximity of the two porphyrins in meso-meso-linked diporphyrins. In addition to the gradual red-shift of the exciton split Soret band, the calculations predict that the high-energy absorption band at about 400 nm, the lower energy Cotton effect, and the RR spectra taken for excitation at 457.9 nm are due to the CT states which are intensified upon a decrease in the dihedral angle.

Analysis of the peptides (Prp106-126, MSI-78A, and Oxaldie 1) with the same biological activity by discrete Fourier transform: toward a selection rule in ligand-receptor interaction.

Here, we first report a novel method in which the "desired cross-spectrum" of the peptides Prp106-126, MSI-78A, and oxaldie 1 with the same biological activities is obtained by the multiplication of two cross-spectra derived from the RNA sequence and from the cognate amino acid sequence by discrete Fourier transform (DFT), respectively. Based on a well-known method reported previously, we investigated the cross-spectrum by the multiplication of two of three desired cross-spectra. As a result, we found that one prominent peak occurring in the three cross-spectra showed the same frequency when a binary scale was used as a parameter of nucleotide or amino acid in the analysis. Moreover, we examined the relationship between a binary scale and other physicochemical ones. Almost the same results could be reproduced when the absolute electronegativity scale (or the absolute hardness one) was used, but not in the case of the hydrophobic or electron-ion interacting potential scale reported previously. This indicates that either the absolute electronegativity scale (or the absolute hardness one) or a binary scale, or both is very useful in extracting the information desired for various proteins by the present method from the amino acid and the RNA sequence.

Photophysical properties of porphyrin tapes.

The novel fused Zn(II)porphyrin arrays (Tn, porphyrin tapes) in which the porphyrin macrocycles are triply linked at meso-meso, beta-beta, beta-beta positions have been investigated by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic measurements along with theoretical MO calculations. The absorption spectra of the porphyrin tapes show a systematic downshift to the IR region as the number of porphyrin pigments increases in the arrays. The fused porphyrin arrays exhibit a rapid formation of the lowest excited states (for T2, approximately 500 fs) via fast internal conversion processes upon photoexcitation at 400 nm (Soret bands), which is much faster than the internal conversion process of approximately 1.2 ps observed for a monomeric Zn(II)porphyrin. The relaxation dynamics of the lowest excited states of the porphyrin tapes were accelerated from approximately 4.5 ps for the T2 dimer to approximately 0.3 ps for the T6 hexamer as the number of porphyrin units increases, being explained well by the energy gap law. The overall photophysical properties of the porphyrin tapes were observed to be in a sharp contrast to those of the orthogonal porphyrin arrays. The PPP-SCI calculated charge-transfer probability indicates that the lowest excited state of the porphyrin tapes (Tn) resembles a Wannier-type exciton closely, whereas the lowest excited state of the directly linked porphyrin arrays can be considered as a Frenkel-type exciton. Conclusively, these unique photophysical properties of the porphyrin tapes have aroused much interest in the fundamental photophysics of large flat organic molecules as well as in the possible applications as electric wires, IR sensors, and nonlinear optical materials.

Facile synthesis, crystal structures, and high-spin cationic states of all-para-brominated oligo(N-phenyl-m-aniline)s.

Syntheses of both the dimer (3) and the trimer (4) of all-para-brominated poly(N-phenyl-m-aniline)s (2c) were achieved in a one-pot procedure from the parent nonbrominated oligomers and benzyltrimethylammonium tribromide [(BTMA)Br(3)]. An X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that 4 has a U-shaped structure, suggesting that 2c easily adopts helical structures. Furthermore, the redox properties were investigated by the UV-vis and EPR measurements. It was confirmed that the both 3 and 4 can be oxidized into the dications 3(2+) and 4(2+) with triplet spin-multiplicity.

Theoretical study of the dechlorination reaction pathways of octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.

The dechlorination reaction pathways of 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9-octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) by the hydrogen atom are investigated by the density-functional theory B3PW91 method. The dechlorination reactions have large exothermicity and small activation energies. The activation energies (approximately 5 kcal/mol) of the sigma-complex formation due to the hydrogen addition are lower than those (approximately 9 kcal/mol) of the direct chlorine abstraction. It is suggested that the sigma-complex plays an important role in the reactions, although it has scarcely been shown in previous studies of the dechlorination of dioxins. The sigma-complex formation is favored at low temperatures and the chlorine abstraction is favored at high temperatures. Furthermore, it is found that the lateral positions have a marginal preference over the longitudinal positions. The dechlorination of OCDD by the hydrogen atom is thus not likely to result in a dominant formation of the laterally substituted toxic congeners.

N-Methyl-Substituted Aza[1(n)()]metacyclophane: Preparation, Structure, and Properties.

A series of aza[1(n)()]metacyclophanes (n = 3-8), which correspond to the cyclic oligomers of poly(m-aniline), are obtained in one step by a Pd(0)-catalyzed amination reaction of 3-bromo-N-methylaniline. The most stable conformations of the cyclic trimer and tetramer are determined by density functional calculations. The theoretical results show that these new macrocyclic compounds can be regarded as precursors for cyclophane-based high-spin molecules. Moreover, we describe their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties in connection with the ring size of these cyclic oligomers.

Ferromagnetic Interaction between Aminium Radical Centers through m-Phenylene and m-1,3,5-Triazinediyl.

Ab initio MO study (at the ROHF, GVB, and CASSCF levels) of m-phenylenediamine (1) and 2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine (2) dication diradicals, which are model molecules of two possible high-spin polymers, poly(m-aniline) and poly(imino-1,3,5-triazinediyl) cation radicals, is presented. On the basis of qualitative MO considerations, it was seen that the electronic structures of 1(2+) and 2(2+) differed considerably. The singlet-triplet splittings (DeltaE(S)(-)(T)) of 1(2+) and 2(2+) were calculated to be 0.7 and 12.5 kcal/mol, respectively, at the CASPT2 level. m-1,3,5-Triazinediyl is shown to be a strong ferromagnetic coupler for aza-substituted systems.
