Clinical application of interventional techniques in the treatment of Budd-Chiari syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical value of various kinds of interventional techniques in the treatment of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS). METHODS: Multiple techniques such as recanalization of the inferior vena cava (IVC) under the guidance of marker and multi-angled fluoroscopy, recanalization of the hepatic vein with a transjugular approach, PTA, Z-expandable metallic stent (Z-EMS) implantation and modified TIPSS were used to treat 103 patients with BCS. RESULTS: Of 103 patients with BCS, 59 patients with obstruction of IVC were treated using recanalization of IVC. Seventeen patients with hepatic vein obstruction had their hepatic veins recanalized. The rest of the patients were given other methods of interventional treatment. Of all the subjects, 101 successfully underwent their procedures, with a success rate of 98.06%; and only 2 failed to recanalization of the IVC. Fifty-three patients were treated using PTA for the first time, with a success rate of 100%. In the 48 patients undergoing Z-EMS implantation for the first time, the success rate was 95.8%. Five patients were treated with modified TIPSS. After these interventional treatments, the success rate was 100%. Two patients died 16 h and 72 h respectively after operation because of DIC and severe hemoptysis. Seventy-two patients were followed up for 1 - 94 months (with a mean of 42.3 months). The mean follow-up of a BCS patient treated with PTA was 52.1 months, resulting in a primary patent rate of 59.4% and a restenosis rate of 40.6%. The mean follow-up of BCS treated with stenting was 33.5 months, with a primary patent rate of 87.5% and a restenosis rate of 12.5%. Eight patients died 7 - 64 months after the interventional procedure. CONCLUSION: Recanalization of IVC or the hepatic vein transjugularly, PTA, Z-EMS implantation and modified TIPSS can be regarded as safe and effective micro-invasive methods in the treatment of BCS.

Relationship of the delta-opioid receptor gene to heroin abuse in a large Chinese case/control sample.

Pharmacological and electrophysiological evidence has shown that opioid receptors are involved in the mechanism of heroin dependence. Thus, opioid receptors are appropriate candidate genes for case-control association studies of heroin dependence. Previously, two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), OPRD1 921T > C and 80G > T, of the human delta opioid receptor gene were used in population-based studies of heroin dependence. One study in a German population found that OPRD1 921T > C was associated with heroin dependence. This finding, however, was not replicated in a different German sample. To test the hypothesis that OPRD1 or a closely linked gene is associated with heroin dependence, we used 5' nuclease assays to genotype both OPRD1 SNPs in 450 Chinese heroin dependent patients and 304 unaffected controls from the same population. In addition, five SNPs distributed in four other genes: ADH2, ALDH2, OPRM1, and DRD1, were used as genomic control loci to test the case and control populations for stratification bias. Genotype and allele frequencies at OPRD1 921T > C were not significantly different, and the OPRD1 80G was absent from both Chinese opioid dependence patients and controls. Based on the genotype and allele frequencies of the genomic control loci, there was no evidence for stratification bias capable of masking an association of OPRD1 to heroin dependence in this large and homogenous Chinese sample. Therefore, these data do not support an association between the OPRD1 gene and heroin dependence in the Chinese population.

[Association study of heroin-dependence and -287 A/G polymorphism of catechol-O-methyltransferase gene].

OBJECTIVE: To detect the relationship between heroin-dependence and -287 A/G polymorphism of catechol-O-methyltransferase(COMT) gene. METHODS: Genotype and allele frequencies of -287 A/G polymorphism of COMT gene were examined in 268 heroin-dependent subjects and 177 normal controls. RESULTS: Weak but significant difference in genotype of -287 A/G polymorphism of COMT gene was observed between heroin-dependent subjects and controls (chi(2)=7.41, P=0.025), and genotype AA was higher in the former. The frequency of allele A of -287 A/G polymorphism of COMT gene was also significantly higher in heroin-dependent subjects than in the controls (chi(2)=5.69, P=0.017). CONCLUSION: The results suggested that liability to heroin-dependence was associated with -287 A/G polymorphism of COMT gene.

Real-time 3D human capture system for mixed-reality art and entertainment.

A real-time system for capturing humans in 3D and placing them into a mixed reality environment is presented in this paper. The subject is captured by nine cameras surrounding her. Looking through a head-mounted-display with a camera in front pointing at a marker, the user can see the 3D image of this subject overlaid onto a mixed reality scene. The 3D images of the subject viewed from this viewpoint are constructed using a robust and fast shape-from-silhouette algorithm. The paper also presents several techniques to produce good quality and speed up the whole system. The frame rate of our system is around 25 fps using only standard Intel processor-based personal computers. Besides a remote live 3D conferencing and collaborating system, we also describe an application of the system in art and entertainment, named Magic Land, which is a mixed reality environment where captured avatars of human and 3D computer generated virtual animations can form an interactive story and play with each other. This system demonstrates many technologies in human computer interaction: mixed reality, tangible interaction, and 3D communication. The result of the user study not only emphasizes the benefits, but also addresses some issues of these technologies.

Characterization of 35 novel microsatellite DNA markers from the duck (Anas platyrhynchos) genome and cross-amplification in other birds.

In order to study duck microsatellites, we constructed a library enriched for (CA)n, (CAG)n, (GCC)n and (TTTC)n. A total of 35 pairs of primers from these microsatellites were developed and used to detect polymorphisms in 31 unrelated Peking ducks. Twenty-eight loci were polymorphic and seven loci were monomorphic. A total of 117 alleles were observed from these polymorphic microsatellite markers, which ranged from 2 to 14 with an average of 4.18 per locus. The frequencies of the 117 alleles ranged from 0.02 to 0.98. The highest heterozygosity (0.97) was observed at the CAUD019 microsatellite locus and the lowest heterozygosity (0.04) at the CAUD008 locus, and 11 loci had heterozygosities greater than 0.50 (46.43%). The polymorphism information content (PIC) of 28 loci ranged from 0.04 to 0.88 with an average of 0.42. All the above markers were used to screen the polymorphism in other bird species. Two markers produced specific monomorphic products with the chicken DNA. Fourteen markers generated specific fragments with the goose DNA: 5 were polymorphic and 9 were monomorphic. But no specific product was detected with the peacock DNA. Based on sequence comparisons of the flanking sequence and repeat, we conclude that 2 chicken loci and 14 goose loci were true homologous loci of the duck loci. The microsatellite markers identified and characterized in the present study will contribute to the genetic map, quantitative traits mapping, and phylogenetic analysis in the duck and goose.

Cisternal segment of the normal abducent nerve: MR imaging with 3D fast asymmetric spin echo sequence.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to reveal the techniques and findings of the 3D fast asymmetric spin echo (3D FASE) sequence for imaging the cisternal segment of the normal abducent nerve. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were examined using the 3D FASE sequence, and oblique coronal and oblique sagittal images were reconstructed according to the specific course of the abducent nerve. RESULTS: The abducent nerve was identified with certainty and displayed on the oblique coronal and oblique sagittal reconstructed images in 80% of cases using Dorello's canal as landmark. The bilateral nerve of one case and unilateral nerve of two cases could not be identified and displayed. The mean diameter of the cisternal segment was 1.39 mm on 3D FASE image. CONCLUSIONS: The 3D FASE sequence can be used to image the cisternal segment of the abducent nerve with Dorello's canal as a landmark.
