Acute effects of hyperglycaemia with and without exercise on endothelial function in healthy young men.

Post-prandial hyperglycaemia impairs endothelial function as evaluated by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Exercise is an intervention to protect against cardiovascular disease and to improve FMD. In this study, we examined whether the effect of acute hyperglycaemia on endothelial function in healthy young men is restored by aerobic exercise. Using a counterbalanced, randomized crossover design, we measured the brachial artery FMD at baseline and 1, 2, 3 and 4 h after 75 g glucose ingestion in 11 healthy young men, with and without a single bout of aerobic exercise. Brachial artery FMD declined from 11.4 +/- 3.8% at baseline to 7.3 +/- 3.4% 1 h after oral glucose ingestion, and returned to baseline after 4 h. When the oral glucose ingestion was followed immediately by 45 min of treadmill exercise at an intensity of 60% maximal oxygen uptake, FMD demonstrated no significant decrease (11.8 +/- 2.5, 11.3 +/- 2.8, 12.2 +/- 2.7, 13.5 +/- 3.5, and 12.6 +/- 2.4% at baseline and 4 h after ingestion, respectively). The results indicate that the aerobic exercise restores the impaired FMD induced by oral glucose ingestion.

The effects of an instant haw beverage on lipid levels, antioxidant enzyme and immune function in hyperlipidemia patients.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of an instant haw beverage in regulating lipid disturbance, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity and immune function. METHODS: Data was collected from 60 hyperlipidemic subjects. In this crossover design, each subject randomly received either the instant haw beverage (100 ml corresponding to 3 g of haw powder or 30 g of fresh haw fruit plus the carrier-guar gum plus some starch) or placebo (guar gum 1.5 g plus some starch as the carrier of the beverage) twice daily. Each supplementation lasted 31 days with a 28-day washout period between treatments. RESULTS: The instant haw beverage significantly reduced total serum cholesterol (9.6%), triglyceride (12.1%), LDLC (18%) while significantly increased SOD activities (7.5%). The placebo was shown to have positive results in some of the lipid profiles, though the effects of the instant haw beverage demonstrated greater significance. Serum triglyceride levels were significantly decreased and SOD activity significantly increased only as subjects were supplemented with the instant haw beverage while no significant changes were seen with placebo. CONCLUSION: Supplementation with the instant haw beverage positively affects blood lipid profile, antioxidant status and immune function in individuals with hyperlipidemia.

[Study on animal models for hyperlipidemia].

To establish a better animal model for hyperlipidemia, three animal models with SD rats, Wistar rats and golden hamsters were explored. The semi-purified diet for rats was composed of 1% cholesterol, 10% lard, 10% yolk powder and 79% normal diet. The semi-purified diet for hamster was composed of 0.2% cholesterol, 15% lard and 85% normal diet. Serum TC, TG, HDL-C, liver cholesterol and triglyceride were assayed. Serum TG of SD rat, Wistar rat and hamster was 194.4%, 86.2% and 84.3% respectively higher than that of control after 5 weeks of experiment. Serum TC of the three groups was 76.8%, 48.3% and 134.8% respectively higher than that of control. The results suggested that hamster might be a better animal model for hypercholesterolemia and SD rat might be better for hypertriglyceridemia.
