Multimode lasing in two-dimensional fully chaotic cavity lasers.

Multimode lasing in a fully chaotic cavity is investigated numerically by using a nonlinear dynamics model. We report a transition process from single-mode lasing to multimode lasing and reveal interactions among the lasing modes. In particular, both mode-pulling and mode-pushing interactions are shown to decrease the number of effective lasing modes. In addition, coexistence of different types of attractors of the final lasing states is numerically confirmed.

Mode expansion description of stadium-cavity laser dynamics.

The lasing dynamics of a stadium-cavity laser is studied by using a mode expansion model which is a reduction of the Schrödinger-Bloch model. We study the properties of stationary lasing states when two cavity modes are selectively excited, while examining the validity of the mode expansion model by comparing its results with those of the Schrödinger-Bloch model. Some analytical results are obtained for single-mode and two-mode stationary lasing states for the mode expansion model.

Nonlinear whispering-gallery modes in a microellipse cavity.

We study theoretically the effect of deformed microelliptical cavities on lasing characteristics. We show that the transition of stationary lasing states from unidirectional rotational waves to a mixture of clockwise and anticlockwise rotational waves occurs when the shape of a disk is deformed to that of an ellipse.

Asymmetric stationary lasing patterns in 2D symmetric microcavities.

Locking of two resonance modes of different symmetry classes and different frequencies in 2D resonant microcavity lasers is investigated by using a nonlinear dynamical model. The patterns of stationary lasing states and far fields are asymmetric in spite of the symmetric shape of the resonant microcavity. The corresponding phenomenon is actually observed in the experiment of a 2D semiconductor microcavity laser diode.

Stable oscillations of a spatially chaotic wave function in a microstadium laser.

Laser action on a single spatially chaotic wave function is obtained as a final stable state in a nonlinear dynamical model of a stadium shaped resonant cavity with an active medium. The stable single-mode lasing state corresponds to a particular metastable resonance of the cavity which wins a competition among multiple modes with positive net linear gain and has a distinct lasing threshold.

Anderson localized state as a predissipative state: irreversible emission of thermalized quanta from a dynamically delocalized state.

It was shown that localization in one-dimensional disordered (quantum) electronic system is destroyed against coherent harmonic perturbations and the delocalized electron exhibits an unlimited diffusive motion [Yamada and Ikeda, Phys. Rev. E 59, 5214 (1999)]. The appearance of diffusion implies that the system has potential for irreversibility and dissipation. In the present paper, we investigate dissipative property of the dynamically delocalized state, and we show that an irreversible quasistationary energy flow indeed appears in the form of a "heat" flow when we couple the system with another dynamical degree of freedom. In the concrete we numerically investigate dissipative properties of a one-dimensional tight-binding electronic system perturbed by time-dependent harmonic forces, by coupling it with a quantum harmonic oscillator or a quantum anharmonic oscillator. It is demonstrated that if the on-site potential is spatially irregular an irreversible energy transfer from the scattered electron to the test oscillator occurs. Moreover, the test oscillator promptly approaches a thermalized state characterized by a well-defined time-dependent temperature. On the contrary, such a relaxation process cannot be observed at all for periodic potential systems. Our system is one of the minimal quantum systems in which a distinct nonequilibrium statistical behavior is self-induced.
