Assessment of wastewater treatment plant workers exposed to biosolids: Pilot test of a newly developed health survey.

The purpose of this study was to develop and pilot test a health survey for wastewater treatment workers exposed to biosolids, using an upstream framework for environmental health. The questionnaire included items about health status, symptoms, frequency of contact with biosolids, use of personal protective equipment, and demographic data. A majority of workers regularly exposed to biosolids reported at least one health-related symptom, although some attributed their symptoms to contact with materials other than biosolids. All 11 participants took unnecessary health risks such as periodically neglecting to wear masks, respirators, gloves, or goggles to protect themselves from potential exposure to biosolids. However, those who reported symptoms were the least compliant with personal protective equipment use. Survey results highlighted that occupational health nurses must effectively communicate to their clients the need for proper use of personal protective equipment when working with potentially hazardous material.

MRI diffusion-based filtering: a note on performance characterisation.

Frequently MRI data is characterised by a relatively low signal to noise ratio (SNR) or contrast to noise ratio (CNR). When developing automated Computer Assisted Diagnostic (CAD) techniques the errors introduced by the image noise are not acceptable. Thus, to limit these errors, a solution is to filter the data in order to increase the SNR. More importantly, the image filtering technique should be able to reduce the level of noise, but not at the expense of feature preservation. In this paper we detail the implementation of a number of 3D diffusion-based filtering techniques and we analyse their performance when they are applied to a large collection of MR datasets of varying type and quality.

Rapid automated measurement of body fat distribution from whole-body MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to determine the feasibility of using computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) techniques to automatically identify, localize, and measure body fat tissue from a rapid whole-body MRI examination. CONCLUSION: Whole-body MRI in conjunction with CAD allows a fast, automatic, and accurate approach to body fat measurement and localization and can be a useful alternative to body mass index. Whole-body fat analysis can be achieved in less than 5 min.

Accuracy of references in five biomedical informatics journals.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate and type of errors in biomedical informatics journal article references. METHODS: References in articles from the first 2004 issues of five biomedical informatics journals, Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Journal of Biomedical Informatics, International Journal of Medical Informatics, Methods of Information in Medicine, and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine were compared with MEDLINE for journal, authors, title, year, volume, and page number accuracy. If discrepancies were identified, the reference was compared with the original publication. Two reviewers independently evaluated each reference. RESULTS: The five journal issues contained 37 articles. Among the 656 eligible references, 225 (34.3%) included at least one error. Among the 225 references, 311 errors were identified. One or more errors were found in the bibliography of 31 (84%) of the 37 articles. The reference error rates by journal ranged from 22.1% to 40.7%. Most errors (39.0%) occurred in the author element, followed by the journal (31.2%), title (17.7%), page (7.4%), year (3.5%), and volume (1.3%) information. CONCLUSION: The study identified a considerable error rate in the references of five biomedical informatics journals. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references and should more carefully check them, possibly using informatics-based assistance.
