Adolescent smoking behavior in Japan, 1996.

We conducted second nationwide survey on smoking behavior among Japanese high school students. The survey was a cross-sectional sampling survey. The survey's targets were junior and senior high schools throughout Japan. Sample schools were selected by stratified cluster sampling. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires were sent to sample schools for all students to fill out. 65.6% of the junior high schools and 67.0% of the senior high schools were responded to this survey. A total of 117,325 students responded and 115,814 questionnaires were subjected to analysis. 7.5% of boys and 3.8% of girls in the 1st grade of junior high school were classified as current smokers, compared with 36.9% of boys and 15.6% of girls in 3rd grade of senior high school. Less than 1% of boys and girls in the 1st grade of junior high school were classified as daily smokers, this figure increased markedly by the 3rd grade of senior high school to reach 25.4% of boys and 7.1% of girls. Of students in the 3rd grade of senior high school, 21.2% of boys and 9.9% of girls had tried smoking before 13 year of age. Cigarette consumption also increased with age, although the proportion of those smoking 20 or more cigarettes per day did not. The major source for cigarettes among current smokers was vending machines. This survey revealed that smoking prevalence among Japanese high school students has already reached quite high level. Comprehensive energetic measures for control minor smoking are necessary in Japan.

Evaluation of rewarding effect of toluene by the conditioned place preference procedure in mice.

Toluene and many toluene-containing products are abused via inhalation. Previous investigations have used the place preference paradigm to evaluate the rewarding effects of commonly abused drugs such as morphine, cocaine, and amphetamine. A conditioning paradigm of toluene inhalation was developed in order to estimate the rewarding effect in mice. Conditioning sessions (five for toluene, five for air) were conducted twice daily for 5 days using a newly developed airtight inhalation shuttlebox (15x30x15 cm: wxlxh), which was divided into two compartments of equal size. One compartment was white with a textured floor, and the other was black with a smooth floor. All conditioning sessions were 20 min in duration, with a minimum of 7 h between sessions. Test sessions were carried out 1 day after the final training session with mice in a drug-free state. The time spent in each compartment during a 20-min session was measured using a digital video camera. Exposure to toluene vapors (700-3200 ppm) produced a significant conditioned place preference in mice. These results suggest that the conditioned place preference procedure using the newly developed airtight inhalation shuttlebox constitutes an important tool for studying the rewarding effect of abused solvents.

Prevalence of solvent inhalation among junior high school students in Japan and their background lifestyle: results of Chiba prefecture survey 1994.

To estimate the lifetime prevalence of solvent abuse among general junior high school students in Chiba prefecture and to understand their background lifestyle, in 1994 the author surveyed 6,795 students enrolled in 15 junior high schools. The lifetime prevalence of solvent abuse was 1.9% in males, 1.1% in females and 1.5% of the total. This implied that the lifetime prevalence of solvent abuse was decreasing year-on-year in males, had recovered to the 1990 level in total, but had stagnated between the 1990 level and the 1992 level in females. The regularity of daily life was more significantly disturbed in Lifetime Users than in Non-Users. School life and family life were significantly less relaxed for Lifetime Users than for Non-Users. Cigarette smoking and some types of alcohol drinking were strongly related to solvent abuse. More Lifetime Users than Non-Users were aware of harmful effects of solvent abuse. The author suggests that developing practical educative measures to promote behavioral change, as well as increasing the frequency with which the entire family eats dinner together, is necessary.

Prevalence of substance abuse among patients with physical diseases seen in an emergency room in Japan.

According to a nationwide general population survey on drug use in Japan, the lifetime prevalence of methamphetamine is low when compared to the United States. To confirm the hypothesis of a lower point prevalence of methamphetamine in an emergency room (ER) in Japan than in the United States, we collected blood specimens from an urban area of heavy methamphetamine prevalence in Tokyo, Japan, and analyzed the sera using REMEDi-HS based on an unlinked anonymity. Twenty kinds of drugs other than psychotropics were detected in 55 of 279 subjects (19.7%). Nineteen kinds of psychotropics were detected in twenty (7.2%) subjects. Psychotropics were detected in eleven patients with physical diseases and no acute intoxication. Methamphetamines were detected in three subjects (1.09%, 95% confidence interval 1.073-1.088) and in one of 46 subjects with injury (2.2%). It is necessary to look at the methodological differences between this study and previous studies; however, this finding supports the lower point prevalence of methamphetamine in an ER in Japan than in an ER in the United States.
