Noise suppression properties of an interferometer-based regenerator for differential phase-shift keying data.

We studied the amplitude and phase noise suppression properties of an all-optical regenerator for differential phase-shift keying data. A detailed analytical investigation is performed and compared with numerical simulations for different working points. The results show that both amplitude and phase can be regenerated. However, simultaneous amplitude and phase noise suppression is possible only if the phase degradation is stronger than the amplitude degradation, for instance, due to nonlinear phase noise.

Analytical relation between effective mode field area and waveguide dispersion in microstructure fibers.

For optical fibers exhibiting a radially symmetric refractive index profile, there exists an analytical relation that connects waveguide dispersion and the Petermann-II mode field radius. We extend the usefulness of this relation to the nonradially symmetric case of microstructure fibers in the anomalous dispersion regime, yielding a simple relation between dispersion and effective mode field area. Assuming a Gaussian mode distribution, we derive a fundamental upper limit for the effective mode field area that is required to obtain a certain amount of anomalous waveguide dispersion. This relation is demonstrated to show excellent agreement for fiber designs suited for supercontinuum generation and soliton lasers in the near infrared.

Analysis of nonlinear phase noise in single-channel return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying transmission systems.

Self-phase modulation and intrachannel cross-phase-modulation- (IXPM) induced nonlinear phase noise is investigated by the variational method. IXPM can cause a considerable increase of phase noise. We show, however, that IXPM leads to a partial correlation between the phase noises of adjacent pulses, which tends to reduce the influence of nonlinear phase noise in return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying transmission. In highly dispersive transmission systems, intrachannel four-wave mixing-induced differential phase fluctuations are typically larger than differential nonlinear phase noise. The analysis is validated by Monte Carlo simulation.

Highly efficient mode-locked Yb:Sc2O3 laser.

Passive mode locking of the Yb:Sc2O3 laser is demonstrated. We investigate the laser performance with Ti:sapphire and diode-laser pumping. The laser is mode locked by use of a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror and emits as much as 0.8 W of power in the picosecond range with a pump efficiency as high as 47%. With dispersion compensation, pulses as short as 230 fs for an average power of 0.54 W are obtained at 1044 nm. This is, to our knowledge, the first femtosecond oscillator based on an Yb-doped sesquioxide crystal.
