A university-community model for the integration of nutrition research, practice, and education.

A model to integrate nutrition research, practice, and education was conceptualized and implemented to enhance student learning opportunities. The model encourages partnerships between educators and practitioners by providing a mechanism for faculty researchers to work with community practitioners to identify applied research and education projects in which students can participate in the design, implementation, analysis, and reporting. Learning experiences are discussed in relation to the knowledge and performance requirements for entry-level dietitians as mandated by The American Dietetic Association. Faculty and community practitioner relationships to support student learning and goal attainment are described. The research, practice, and education model has particular application to other universities struggling to balance limited resources with increasing expectations for community-university partnerships, and expectations for excellent teaching and scholarship. Resources needed (ie, staff, support services, and physical facilities) to develop and implement the model are discussed. Finally, acquisition options such as shared resources and in-kind contributions are suggested.

Effectiveness of a nutrition education and physical fitness training program in lowering lipid levels in the black elderly.

A multidisciplinary nutrition education and fitness training program was tested for its effectiveness in lowering lipid profiles of elderly clients through dietary modification and exercise. The program served 31 free-living, predominantly female, black elderly aged 56-88 years. Dietary, anthropometric, biochemical, and fitness assessments were performed before and after the 10-week, biweekly program. Significant decreases (p < 0.05) were seen in waist circumference, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C), and TC/HDL-C ratio. These findings suggest a 10-week, biweekly program can be effective in producing both significant, as well as favorable changes, in atherogenic lipids in elderly black subjects.

Behavioral medicine: an emerging field of social work practice.

The burgeoning field of behavioral medicine is reviewed in terms of its relevance and implications for social work practice. This article reviews the behavioral medicine paradigm and its applications relevant to social work practice in health care settings. Specific applications of social learning theory to the treatment of cardiac disorders, chronic pain, headaches, obesity, and smoking are reviewed. The manuscript concludes with a review of practice issues.

An interdisciplinary nutrition assessment and intervention protocol for children with disabilities.

Because of the multifactorial nature of the nutrition problems associated with developmental disabilities, a well-organized, interdisciplinary effort is necessary to deal with such problems. A team composed of professional and support staff, the client, and the family needs to be involved in an integrated approach to service. The team members share their knowledge and expertise in developing an individual program plan to meet identified needs. This article describes the development and implementation of a prototype for interdisciplinary nutritional evaluation and intervention in an outpatient setting. In 1987, a Regional Nutrition and Feeding Diagnosis and Evaluation Clinic was established through a contractual agreement between the University of Georgia University Affiliated Program and St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, GA. The purposes of the clinic are twofold: to offer direct services to developmentally disabled infants and children who require outpatient services and to provide a unique community-based interdisciplinary training experience for graduate students in nutrition and other health disciplines. The interdisciplinary treatment protocol is based on current knowledge in the treatment of developmental disabilities.

Nutritional status of institutionalized children and adolescents with developmental disabilities.

The relationship was explored between anomalies associated with developmental disabilities and nutritional status of institutionalized children and adolescents who received comprehensive interdisciplinary services. Variables included dietary intake, serum laboratory values, anthropometric measurements, feeding skills assessment, and clinical assessment. Mean intakes of nutrients were greater than 67% of Recommended Daily Allowances. Laboratory values were within normal ranges with the exceptions of serum ferritin, which was borderline or below normal in 46% of the males and 55% of the females, and alkaline phosphatase, which was elevated in 70% of residents receiving anticonvulsants. Energy intake was highest in residents with adequate feeding skills, followed by nonfeeders and feeders requiring behavior management. Subjects had greater triceps skinfold and lower mid-arm muscle circumference and weight measurements as compared to reference data. Findings of this study suggest that these developmentally disabled children and adolescents who received comprehensive interdisciplinary nutritional services, in general, are adequately nourished and have nutrient intakes that meet the RDA requirements.

Comprehensive employment preparation for adolescents with developmental disabilities: an empirical paradigm.

This paper presents a comprehensive employment preparation intervention for adolescents with developmental disabilities. Vocational preparation is viewed in terms of the development of job and related psychosocial skills. The Comprehensive Employment Preparation program is designed to help youth and young adults with developmental disabilities acquire the skills necessary to prepare them for effective functioning as self-sustaining, working members of society. Substantial research indicates that social, problem-solving and employment-seeking skills are significant factors in attaining and maintaining employment. At this time, relevant literature clearly reveals that progress is being made in assessing individual deficiencies and programs for development of improved social competency. Future policy and research issues are reviewed.

Interdisciplinary case management: a model for intervention.

Interdisciplinary case management is required when clients present problems that do not fall within the purview of any one discipline. The interdisciplinary approach entails the participation of professional and support staff, along with the client and his/her family, in diagnosis, individual program planning, implementation, and evaluation. For example, interdisciplinary case management for a patient with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) results in cost-effective, efficacious treatment. Because of the diversity of symptoms, the treatment of Prader-Willi syndrome must incorporate knowledge and skills from a variety of areas. A model for the interdisciplinary case management of PWS is presented. The model is problem focused and emphasizes goals formulated and acted upon by the disciplines represented on the client's treatment team. Communication and coordination of efforts are central to the utility of the model. Additional benefits of interdisciplinary case management include the opportunity for ongoing education and role expansion of team members.

Nutrition intervention in developmental disabilities: an interdisciplinary approach.

The nutritional status of developmentally disabled persons is influenced by variables infrequently encountered in normal nutrition. The multitude of factors requires an approach to care that must incorporate information and assistance from a variety of disciplines. A model for viewing the network of variables is proposed as a tool for identifying voids in nutrition care and for developing appropriate plans that include interdisciplinary interactions for those persons with special needs.
