Evaluation of the clinical efficacy of marbofloxacin (Zeniquin) tablets for the treatment of canine pyoderma: an open clinical trial.

The efficacy and field safety of marbofloxacin (Zeniquin) for the treatment of superficial and deep bacterial pyoderma were evaluated. Seventy-two dogs were treated with 2.75 mg kg-1 of marbofloxacin orally once daily for 21 or 28 days. Sixty-two dogs (86%) had superficial pyoderma and 10 (14%) had deep pyoderma. A history of prior pyoderma was reported in 39/72 dogs. Pretreatment aerobic bacteriologic cultures of skin lesions were performed in 47 cases and the predominant pathogen isolated was Staphylococcus intermedius. Treatment was successful in 62/72 (86.1%) dogs, improvement was noted in 6/72 (8.3%) dogs and treatment failed in 4/72 (5.6%) dogs. Adverse effects associated with treatment included listlessness, anorexia, vomiting, soft stool, flatulence and polydipsia; these adverse effects were seen in only 6/81 dogs. Marbofloxacin was safe and effective for the treatment of superficial and deep pyoderma in dogs at the dosage used in this study.

Role of geons in object recognition across ages.

Little research has been conducted regarding the developmental implications of Biederman's 1987 Recognition by Components theory. The present study compared objects fragmented according to this theory, i.e., vertices were left intact and midsegments were deleted, with objects that were randomly fragmented. A total of 169 students from three age groups (first grade, fourth grade, and college) participated. Approximately half of the participants viewed pictures with intact vertices and half viewed the randomly fragmented pictures. Analysis showed that participants recognized more pictures across groups; however, there were no significant differences between the two sets of pictures. This finding suggests that vertices are important but are not necessary for object recognition. The role of midsegments in object recognition is also discussed.

Reexamining the Snodgrass and Corwin 1988 picture identification norms.

Snodgrass and Corwin (1988) provided a database of 150 fragmented pictures identified by subjects only 35% of the time. However, recent research by Koch, Abbey, and Schmidt in 1995 with these pictures has yielded higher identification rates. The present study examined the difference in identification rates between Koch, et al., 1995 and Snodgrass and Corwin in 1988. 85 subjects were given 25 min. to identify all 150 pictures from Snodgrass and Corwin. Of the 150 pictures, 95 were identified more than 35% of the time. Since Snodgrass and Corwin used an implicit-learning task while the present study used an object-identification task, the present findings suggest that identification rates may be specific to the type of object-recognition task employed.

Intraarticular noninflammatory free urate suspension (urate milk) in 3 patients with painful joints.

We describe 3 patients with painful intraarticular knee effusions composed of a viscous milky white suspension of monosodium urate crystals, in the absence of any cellular component. Two patients presented with acute bilateral knee pain. One patient presented with unilateral knee pain of gradual onset. All 3 patients had a history of ethanol abuse. Two patients had a history of gout. Two patients had chronic renal insufficiency, hypertension, and congestive heart failure. One patient had alcoholic cirrhosis. Two patients' pain responded to colchicine. One patient's discomfort was relieved only by repeated arthrocentesis. We conclude that intraarticular free urate can cause painful joints in the absence of an apparent inflammatory response.

Myopericarditis in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome diagnosed by gallium scintigraphy.

Myocarditis is among the cardiac complications of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and, yet, is often not discovered until autopsy. Gallium scintigraphy has been employed in diagnosing this entity, but few data are available about its diagnostic accuracy and value. Here, the authors report two cases of myopericarditis as diagnosed by gallium scan.

Assessing quality in home-care programs.

As the chronically homebound population increases, more primary-care individuals and groups will be providing care in the home. Assessing and improving the care of this population involves developing strategies to monitor the quality of care provided (for example, using clinical practice guidelines), assessing the efficacy of plans to help prevent decline, and identifying unavoidable negative outcomes. Outcome indicators for this group must be able to discriminate between expected decline and decline that could have been modified by medical intervention. Because of multiple variables not present in institutional settings, in-home care presents a somewhat different situation than care of nursing home residents.
