Differentiation of Serratia marcescens 274 into swimmer and swarmer cells.

We describe a new sensory response in the enteric bacterium Serratia marcescens. When grown in liquid media, the bacteria were short rods with one to two flagella and displayed classical swimming behavior. Upon transfer to a solid surface (0.7 to 0.8T% agar medium), the bacteria underwent a dramatic change of form. They ceased septation, elongated, and expressed numerous (10 to 100) flagella that covered the lateral sides of the cells. The bacteria now displayed a different form of locomotion--swarming--which allowed them to rapidly move over the top of the solid surface. The differentiation to either swimmer or swarmer cells could be reversed by growth on solid or liquid medium, respectively. To identify conditions that influence this differentiation, the growth environment of S. marcescens was manipulated extensively. The swarming response was monitored by visual and microscopic observation of cell movement on solid surfaces, by immunofluorescent labeling followed by microscopic observation for the presence of elongated, profusely flagellated cells, as well as by estimation of induction of flagellin protein, using Western immunoblot analysis. Conditions that imposed a physical constraint on bacterial movement, such as solid or viscous media, were the most efficient at inducing the swarming response. No chemical constituent of the medium that might contribute to the response could be identified, although the existence of such a component cannot be ruled out. Both swimmer and swarmer cells had flagellin proteins of identical molecular weight, which produced similar proteolysis patterns upon digestion with trypsin.

[Anxiety and illness behavior in bronchial asthma].

In 82 patients attending a one-week asthma self-management education program, asthma symptom anxiety, personality trait anxiety, and attack-related coping styles were correlated with attack frequency, medication regimen and pulmonary function parameters. In 21 patients, asthma symptoms anxiety was shown to influence illness behaviour at follow-up one year later: in patients with severe asthma, greater symptom anxiety was associated with more suitable illness behaviour. Moreover, suitable illness behaviour appears to be related to cognitive coping styles that take into account the asthmatic's feeling of dependency in attacks without denying them.

[In search of the hidden beauty of the psychoanalyst. First contributions from descriptive psychology].

German training analysts, members of the DGPPT-institutes, were questioned about the personality qualities of psychoanalysts. The item-list of the questionnaire contained 66 adjectives which were judged on their degree of adequacy as to a description of qualities of the psychoanalyst. The following characteristics of the analyst were judge: 1. What is required of the analyst, 2. how does one like to see the analyst, 3. how is the analyst perceived. The answers received were analyzed with the help of a Fuzzy Analysis in order to attain the sharpest, that means best solution, respectively the least sharp, that means worst solution, through which a nested categorial framework could be found. The results show that 5 adjectives satisfy an empirical denoting of the categories. The qualities are: "Unnahbarkeit" (unaccessibility), "Unzufriedenheit" (dissatisfaction), "Schwermut" (melancholy), "Trockenheit" (dryness), and "Schönheit" (beauty). The numerical results are transformed into iconic images with the help of a "detectivistic principle", and the meaning of these images is discussed.

[The long path to psychotherapy. On the "patient career" of psychoneurotic and psychosomatic patients].

Among other factors the prognosis of psychoneurotic and psychosomatic disorders depends upon how soon after the onset of the symptoms a specific psychotherapeutic treatment is initiated. A group of one hundred test subjects, selected at random from among the patients admitted for treatment at a special clinic, was used to determine the factors responsible for the duration of the so-called careers of these patients. Contrary to what was expected it turned out that particularly three factors correlate positively with a speedy admission to psychotherapy. Thus younger psychoneurotic or psychosomatic patients, patients who in their own conception consider their disorder to be psychogenic, and patients in whom psychic or psychosomatic complaints have caused an impairment of their function at work, are the ones who are admitted to psychotherapy relatively soon after the first manifestation of their complaints. It must be noted that none of these three factors is explanatory for any of the others.

Pharmacotherapy of agitational states in psychiatric gerontology: double-blind study: febarbamat-pipamperon.

The effects of febarbamat and pipamperon on agitational and aggressive states of patients with diffuse psycho-organic syndrome were compared in a double-blind study on patients over 60 years of age requiring nursing care. Such disorders, particularly in the field of psychiatric gerontology, represent an increasing problem. The neuroleptic agents hitherto prescribed for such agitational states are not only beset with serious side-effects (predyskinesia, drug-induced Parkinson syndrome, sedentary restlessness, postdyskinesia), but particularly with an unwanted suppression of the patients' reactions. It was therefore of particular interest to find out if febarbamat showed an equally good therapeutic effect on aggressive and agitational states, without causing these side-effects (especially suppression of cognitive performance). This could have a positive effect on social and other therapeutic activities. The test substances were therapeutically comparable in their effect on agitational and aggressive states. On the psychological level, febarbamat showed superiority in the cognitive performance parameters.

[The correlation of bacteriobilia/wound infections in elective biliary surgery].

The authors report their experience concerning the cultural study of bile samples taken during elective biliary surgery. All the operations were carried out after a randomized preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis. Among the 138 cases examined the presence of surgical infections (wound infection) was taken into account. A lack of correlation between the germs present in the bile and those isolated from samples of complicated cases, was registered. However, the Authors emphasize that, although antibiotic prophylaxis gives a reduced percentage of postoperative infections, it is unable to sterilize the bile.
