One Touch II hospital system for neonates: correlation with serum glucose values.

A correlation study was conducted to examine the relationship between results from LifeScan's One Touch II blood glucose monitoring system and laboratory analysis of serum glucose values in neonates. A total of 327 blood samples was obtained from newborn infants in a Level III NICU. The comparison of the paired results showed that the r value was .902. The overall results suggest that the LifeScan One Touch II set in the neonatal mode gives results showing good agreement with standard serum glucose values in neonates with serum glucose values < 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/liter).

Implementing a peer review system in a neonatal ICU.

A three-year process involving the redesign of the performance evaluation system has led to a well-established professional peer review system. After one year, the first phase of auditing peers on established indicators was implemented. The second year, formal written communications were established. Finally, during the third year, the program was evaluated, changes made and the entire peer evaluation system emerged.

Pediatric central neurologic trauma: issues for special patients.

Head trauma in the pediatric population older than 1 year occurs in approximately 100,00 children per year, resulting in 250,000 to 500,000 hospitalizations annually. Head trauma accounts for 80% of all trauma deaths. The pathophysiology and management of severe pediatric head trauma is discussed. Traumatic injury to the central nervous system, its sequelae, and approaches to maximize cerebral resuscitation and stabilization are reviewed.
