[Structural organization of amygdaloid brain complex of the rat].

Amygdala belong to the system of basal nuclei of telencephalon. Amygdala are a complicated structure based on both principles of grey matter organization: nuclear and screen-type, on its territory. Authors investigate into the structure of Amygdala using theory of Zavarzin A. As the result of this study, a classification of components of Amygdala into nuclei, paleocortical and intermediate formations, has been developed.

[Neuronal structure of piriform cortex of anterior amygdaloid body of the rat brain].

The cytoarchitecture and neuronal organization were studied in piriform cortex at rostral and caudal levels of anterior amygdaloid body using the methods of Nissl and Golgi. The division of the piriform cortex into several areas is proposed, including basal area (area basalis), lateral area (area lateralis), and transitional, or terminal area (area terminalis), bordering the insular cortex. It is recommended to subdivide the lateral area into two subareas, L1 and L2. All the areas defined differ in their neuroarchitecture, structure of the layers and neuronal composition.

[Brain central amygdaloid nucleus: cytoarchitechtonics, neuronal organization, connections].

This review describes different aspects of structural and functional organization of amygdaloid central nucleus (CN) in association with the findings indicating its involvement in the development of stress reactions and adaptive behavior in animals. The data on the distribution of neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in CN are discussed. It is emphasized that CN appears at the earliest stages of amygdaloid formation, undergoes remodeling together with it and reflects the evolution of the whole amygdaloid. The detailed data are presented on the cytoarchitectonic of amygdaloid CN, its heteromorphism and subdivision into zones (subnuclei), based on the different methods of investigation and evaluation criteria. The neuronal organization of CN and its subnuclei is discussed, and the detailed description of neurons of different types is given according to their topography, cell body dimensions and shape, dendrite orientation and branching pattern, organization of spine apparatus and axon structure. The developmental features of amygdaloid CN in mammalian animal and human ontogenesis are considered. The analysis covering the literature data and the results of authors' own investigations indicates that CN functions not only as intraamigdaloid integrative center, but also as one of the major channels providing both afferent and efferent connections of amygdaloid with other brain structures.

[Structural and quantitative characteristics of dendrites of amygdaloid posterior neurons of the rat brain].

The objective of this study was to describe the dendritic tree of major neuronal groups in amygdaloid posterior division and to analyze their quantitative characteristics. The peculiarities of neuronal organization were studied using rat brain frontal sections impregnated with Goldgi silver nitrate. Neurons were classified according to criteria developed by Leontovich (1978) and Polyakov (1973). It was found that the major groups of neurons are represented by long-axon sparsely branched, subcortical type long-axon densely branched and cortical type long-axon densely branched. Quantitative studies of seven characteristics of dendritic tree have shown that the most informative parameters of the existing differences between major neuronal groups were the number of branching points and the number of dendrite free ends. The contribution of sparsely branched and densely branched neuronal systems in the nuclei, paleocortex and diencephalic formations is described.

[Neuronal organisation of the central part of the brain amygdaloid body].

Characteristics of neurons in amygdala central division were investigated and compared with the data available in literature on the similar parameters of the cells in its anterior and posterior divisions. Silver nitrate impregnation of neurons using Golgi method was used in this work. Classification and measurements of neurons were performed using Leontovich method (1978). Peculiarities of representation and quantitative characteristics of long-axonal and short-axonal neurons in amygdala central division were shown.

[Hematologic and various immunologic parameters of the body response in experimental epileptogenesis].

The aim of present study was to reveal the figures that show the organism reactivity at various stages of the amygdala kindling. We found that a completed kindling formed by stimulation of the piriform cortex, is accompanied by systemic changes in white and red blood. First stages of kindling during the cortical nucleus stimulation are characterised by reactive changes of erythrocytes and thrombocytes suggesting that changes occur in the homeostasis. We discuss possible mechanisms of these changes.

[Characteristics of neurons from the anterior region of the rat amygdaloid body by electron microscopy].

Dark and light neurons with morphological signs of secretory activity are described within one of the major sexually dimorphic zones of brain amygdaloid nucleus (anterior cortical nucleus). Dark neurons are of medium size, they have large nuclei and well developed perikarya. The latter contain numerous free ribosomes and mitochondria, dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns, hypertrophied Golgi complex with forming secretory granules. Elementary neurosecretory granules (ENG) 75-300 nm in size were found in light neurosecretory cells, which seem to be similar to dark cells but are at different phase of functional activity. Synapses of all types known, containing small light vesicles, vesicles with dense core and ENG, were found in active neuropil.

[Neuronal organization of the cortical amygdalic nucleus in the rat brain].

Cytoarchitectonic peculiarities and neuronal organization of anterior (COa) and posterior (COp) cortical nuclei of the rat brain were studied on five levels:rostral and caudal levels of anterior and posterior regions appropriately and transitional hippocampal level. Neuronal composition characteristic for every level and interrelations between neurons of certain layers were demonstrated. The authors opinion is that COa and COp should be classified as interstitial structures, occupying the position between nuclear and screen centres of the nervous system. All the structures of the cortical nucleus portion described are characterized by original neuronal organization.

[Multidimensional analysis of neurons in the subnuclei of the central nucleus of the amygdala].

The multidimensional analysis of quantitative characteristics of dendrite tree of the neurons of the subnuclei of the brain central amygdaloid nucleus was performed. The most stable connections between the parameters of neuronal dendrite tree were detected. By using factor analysis it was demonstrated that the diversity of quantitative characteristics of the cells could be described by four independent variables: "ramification", "dimensionality", "matrix" and "cell body area". As a result of analysis performed, three neuronal clusters were detected. The results of the cluster analysis of neurons are in general agreement with the classification based on the criteria suggested by T.A. Leontovich (1978). The representation of each cluster in subnuclei of the central nucleus was demonstrated taking into account their rostro-caudal extension.

[Cytologic characteristics of "dark" and "light" cells in the brain amygdaloid complex].

This paper reports data on cytological peculiarities of neurons of two main zones of sexual dimorphism in brain amygdala (dorsomedial nucleus and anterior cortical nucleus). The main attention was paid to some characteristics of "dark" and "pale" cells found in the amygdaloid complex for the first time. It is supposed that the dark and pale cells are targets for gonadal steroids, whose cyclic changes in concentration in the blood difined their functional states. Though the ultrastructure of dark and pale cells of the amygdaloid complex is similar to that of neurosecretory cells of hypothalamus, there are necessary electron microscopic and cytochemical evidences.

[The neuronal organization of the periamygdaloid cortex in the rat brain].

Cytoarchitectonic peculiarities and neuronal organization of periamygdaloid cortex (PAC) of rat brain was studied at three levels: rostral and caudal regions of central part and in posterior part of amygdala using Nissl and Golgi methods. Neuronal composition characteristic for each level and interrelations between neurons of different layers were determined. Different levels of PAC vary in architecture of neurons. Periamygdaloid cortex at the rostral level of central region is characterized with more simple organization.

[Structural and quantitative characteristics of nuclear and screen-type formation in the amygdaloid body posterior region].

Cytoarchitecture and planimetry of structures of amygdaloid body posterior region were investigated in view of A.A. Zavarzin concepts on nuclear and screen-type centres of nervous system. Amygdaloid body was shown to be a complicated heterogeneous brain formation, the structure of which reflects both basic principles (nuclear and screen-type) of grey substance organization. Structural and quantitative characteristics of the amygdaloid body posterior region provides a confirmation for assumption that it is a nucleo-paleocortical brain component.

[Electron-microscopic characteristics of the dorsomedial nucleus of the brain amygdala].

Dark and light neurons with morphological signs of secretory activity were discovered for the first time in one of the main zones of sexual dimorphism of brain amygdala (dorsomedial nucleus). Dark neurons were of small and medium sizes, contained large nuclei and incompletely developed perikaryon. The latter contained a large number of free ribosomes, dilated cisterns of endoplasmic reticulum, hypertrophied Golgi complex with forming secretory granules and numerous mitochondria. Elementary neurosecretory granules (ENG) 75-180 nm in size were found in light neurosecretory cells that are likely to represent dark neurons at the specific phase of functional activity. Synapses of all known types, containing small light vesicles in their terminals and vesicles with electron-opaque centre and ENG were detected in the extremely active neuropil.

[Structural and functional organization of sexual dimorphism zones of the amygdala in the normal state and in alloxan diabetes].

Cytoarchitectonics and neuronal organization of sexual dimorphism zones (ZSD) of amygdala, one of the brain higher neuroendocrine centres were studied and reactive changes of this zone neurons were analysed in rats with chronic alloxan diabetes that modulate type I diabetes mellitus in man. Structural organization of main ZSD of amygdala--dorsomedial, anterior and basolateral nuclei displays its characteristic topographical and cytoarchitectonic peculiarities. Neuronal organisation of main amygdala zones is characterized by different ratio of intensely and sparsely dendritic long-axonal neurons. Neurons of all ZSD respond to insulin deficiency--induced disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism in the same type. Reactive changes of neurons defined consist in chromatophilia development and neuron shrinkage and also in significant decline in cell nuclear volume.

[Structural-quantitative characterization of nuclear and screen-like formations in the anterior section of the amygdaloid body of the brain].

Cytoarchitectonics and planimetry of structures of amygdaloid body anterior region were investigated in view of A.A. Zavarzin concepts on nuclear and screen-type centres of nervous system. Amygdaloid body was shown to be a complicated heterogenous brain formation, the structure of which reflects both basic principles (nuclear and screen-type) of grey matter organization. Structural and quantitative characteristics of the amygdaloid body anterior region provides a confirmation for assumption that it is a nucleo-paleocortical brain component.

[What is the cerebral amygdaloid complex?].

The amygdaloid complex (AC) is considered to be one the basal nuclei of the telencephalon. However, a combination of two principals of the grey substance organizations--nuclear and shielded--in its territory, distinguished AC from the group of the subcortical nuclei defines its specific position among other structures of the telencephalon. A peculiar structure of AC is a consequence of certain evolutionary rearrangements of the brain in the process of histological development of organisms; principally important among them is appearance of the ancient cortex formations (++semi-separated) from elements of the ganglionic tubercle. The latter explains existence of tight anatomical and functional connections between typical nuclei and the ancient cortex structures. The new notion of the AC substrate as a specific nucleolar-paleocortical integrative center of the telencephalon gives a clue for understanding a number of specific, still remaining enigmatic functional phenomena in this formation. They evidently reflect a close interaction of its nuclei and paleocortical structures, that makes the base of its activity.
