[Testosterone metabolism in discrete areas of the brain in rat fetuses].

Experiments in vitro with further thin-layer chromatography of steroids were staged to investigate changing of 3H-testosterone into 3H-estradiol-17 beta and 3H-5 alpha-reduced metabolites in a fraction of 1000 g of homogenates of the medial preoptic area (MPA), the paraventricular nuclei (PVN), the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) of the lower cerebral trunk, the rostral and caudal parts of the amygdaloid complex (ACr and ACc) of the brain of 21-day male and female rat fetuses. The activity of aromatase (AA) and 5 alpha-reductase (AR) was detected in all investigated areas. AA was maximum in PVN of females and minimum in ACc of males and females. The production of 5 alpha-dehydrotestosterone prevailed among 5 alpha-reduced products in PVN, DVC and ACr, 5 alpha- and rostane-3 alpha and 17 beta-diol--in MPA and ACr, AR in ACr was much higher than in ACc. AR in DVC of females was slightly higher than in males. Sex differences in the other cerebral areas were undetectable. The results of the investigation suggest that the above cerebral structures are dependent on sex hormones.

[The neuronal reaction of the amygdaloid complex in the dynamics of the estrous cycle].

For investigation of the structural and functional organization of the amygdaloid complex (the cerebral neuroendocrine center) a response of its neurons to the fluctuations of circulating hormones was studied in the time course of the estrous cycle. Karyometry of 22 zones of the corticomedial group and 25 zones of the basolateral groups of the structure of the amygdaloid complex was performed in adult Wistar rats. A response of neurons of several zones of the corticomedial group of nuclei was revealed. A response of neurons of the basolateral nucleus at the caudal level of the central region was revealed in the basolateral group of structures of the amygdaloid complex.

[The amygdaloid body of the brain: some topics for discussion and little-studied problems].

Features of functional morphology of the amygdaloid brain complex (ABC) are analyzed in a new light presenting the notion of the ABC as a nucleo-paleocortical structure. The analysis of the structural organization of ABC could imply the presence of phylogenetically differentiated parts: the ancient, the old and the new amygdala. The presentation carries original data on the morphometric and histophysiological studies under various experimental alterations of the endocrine system. A concept is developed of the existence of a rostrocaudal gradient in the expression of sex-dependent structural and functional features of the amygdaloid complex as a neuroendocrine brain centre. Provided is technical recommendation for use in biological studies of amygdaloid brain complex mathematical models based on the theory of image identification. An original technique has also been recommended for selective dissection of the ABC with its eventual removal from nonfixed brain, which allows studies to be made of the ABC neurophysiological and neurochemical properties on surviving slices. Evidence is adduced indicating involvement of the ABC in the process of the brain sex differentiation.
