[Raman spectra of somatic nerves under different functional conditions].

The light scattering spectra (LS) of different kind of somatic nerves during excitation and its block has been investigated. In the LS spectra of frog nerves the spectra of C40-carotenoids was dominated by the following bands at 1008 cm-1, 1160 cm-1 and 1526 cm-1. The peaks of LS were decreased during the excitation and under the action of ouabain and increased under the action of ether. The changes of LS spectra can be explained by shift of maximum of light intensity of C40-carotenoids uptake and positions of side CH3-radical in polyene chain.

Picosecond fluorometry in primary events of photosynthesis.

Many laboratories in different countries are involved in the study of the mechanism of conversion of light energy into chemical energy, namely photosynthesis. As is evident from the literature, the initial phases of photosynthesis, which determine the character of this process, proceed at time intervals of 10(-8) and 10(-13) s. They are associated with absorption of light quanta and energy transfer from the molecules of light-harvesting antenna (LHA) chlorophyll and accesory pigments to the reaction centers (RC), where the key reaction of photosynthesis occurs: photo-induced charge separation. Evidently it is of importance to study experimentally the process that occurs within the 10(-8) -10(-13)s time domain.

Phytochrome system of the yeast Candida guilliermondii and recovery from ultraviolet injury.

The effect of red (660 nm) and far-red (730 nm) light on the stability of the yeast Candida guilliermondii to lethal u.v. radiation has been studied. Reactivation and protection were exhibited for 30 min after treatment with red light and were abolished by far-red exposure applied within this time period. The temperature dependence of the reactivation effect was also studied. The data obtained showed that the properties of recovery and protection against u.v. exposure are associated with the phytochrome system of the yeast.

Probing the kinetics of photosystem I and photosystem II fluorescence in pea chloroplasts on a picosecond pulse fluorometer.

Picosecond fluorescence kinetics of pea chloroplasts have been investigated at room temperature using a pulse fluorometer with a resolution time of 10-11 s. Fluorescence has been excited by both a ruby and neodymium-glass mode-locked laser and has been reocrded within the 650 to 800 nm spectral region. We have found three-component kinetics of fluorescence from pea chloroplasts with lifetimes of 80, 300 and 4500 ps, respectively. The observed time dependency of the fluorescence of different components on the functional state of the photosynthetic mechanism as well as their spectra enabled us to conclude that Photosystem I fluoresces with a lifetime of 80 ps (tauI) and Photosystem II fluoresces with a lifetime of 300 ps (tauII). Fluorescence with a lifetime of 4500 ps (tauIII) may be interpreted as originating from chlorophill monomeric forms which are not involved in photosynthesis. It was determined that the rise time of Photosystem I and Photosystem II fluorescence after 530 nm photoexcitation is 200 ps, which corrsponds to the time of energy migration to them from carotenoids.
