Changes in cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic children during a camping holiday.

Diabetic children in a holiday camp were divided into two groups according to physical activity. In the active group a significant elevation of HDL-cholesterol and a highly significant decrease in total/HDL-cholesterol ratio were observed. In the inactive group similar but non-significant changes occurred. No appreciable changes were observed in the serum albumin level but the fasting FFA level decreased in both groups, more markedly in the active group. Therefore, the FFA/albumin quotient and also body fat percent decreased considerably in the active group while in the inactive group there were no significant changes.

Effect of exercise on the lipid parameters in the fasting state and under glucose load.

The lipid parameters were studied in the course of exercise in six children in the fasting state and in six under a glucose load. During the test the serum triglyceride level did not change notably, FFA values decreased significantly under the glucose load, most likely due to insulin mobilisation. The total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio underwent a significant change only in the course of physical work done in the fasting state.

[Unusually long post-initial remission in case of steroid-diabetes (author's transl)].

The case of a girl, aged 12, is reported, in whom for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis--concomitant with uveitis--a short steroid treatment was performed. After steroid treatment the diabetes became with the symptoms of a diabetic coma manifest. After the beginning of the insulin administration an unusually long remission period followed,--therefore the insulin was temporarily stopped. On the basis of the known relationship between the juvenile diabetes and autoimmune diseases it is advisable--before the beginning of steroid treatment of auto-immune diseases--to perform intensive sugar metabolism examinations (glucose tolerance test).

Unilateral Potter syndrome with amelia.

In a newborn infant, absence of kidney, hypoplasia of the lung, absence of the subclavian artery, of the adnexa, of the upper limb and its acetabulum were found on the right side, together with renal dysgenesis and other anomalies on the left side. It is presumed that the severe anomalies damaging the right part of the body were consequences of an increased intrauterine pressure due to oligohydramnios.

[Optic nerve atrophy and diabetes mellitus (author's transl)].

A case is reported of diabetes mellitus with optic nerve atropy. Further features of this case were perceptive deafness, ataxia, nystagmus, obstructive uropathy, neurogenic atony of the bladder and diabetes insipidus. It is noteworthy that this patient also displayed progressive dementia which is considered a component of the characteristic clinical syndrome because it is common in other diencephalic syndrome accompanied by diabetes mellitus.

Flexion contractures in a diabetic child (Rosenbloom syndrome).

Limited movement in the fingers and in other joints of a diabetic boy is described. Although a slight contracture of the little finger was observed when diabetes was diagnosed, the progressive nature of the process was only clarified after 8 years. According to the results of te clinical findings the changes are the consequence of rigidity of the connective tissue. The vital capacity of the lungs was also diminished in our patient.
