Electron microscopic results on the ventral prostate of the rat after CdCl2 administration. A contribution towards etiology of the cancer of the prostate.

The prostate epithelium of rats which received repeated cadmium chloride (CdCl2) injections showed a gradual disruption of structural differentiation. Electron microscopy studies revealed severe changes in the ultrastructure affecting all epithelial cell organelles, particularly the nuclei, rough endoplasmatic reticulum, the golgi apparatus, and mitochondria. The cells infiltrating the stroma contained secretory vacuoles and their nuclear evaginations on the invasion front showed similarities to ultrastructural pathological changes in man. Examinations of the ventral prostate following oral CdCl2 administration revealed changes ranging in severity up to dysplasia, but there was no evidence of carcinoma.

Ophthalmic needles. An engineering analysis.

Mechanical engineering formulas to predict the amount of flex and the bend strength expected for surgical needles are presented. Bend strength measurements were made on ophthalmic needles produced from two different materials and several shapes. The agreement between the data derived by measurement and the theoretical predictions is excellent. The force required to penetrate porcine corneas is also measured. A needle strength/penetration force ratio was developed from the data presented in this paper. This ratio reveals that needles produced from smaller wire sizes, if optimally designed, can perform as well as existing larger needles.

[Pure human pancreatic juice. Methodologic aspects of pancreatic juice collection and interpretation of findings].

A procedure to collect pure pancreatic juice endoscopically is described which allows an instant estimation of the protein content of the secretion by measuring its absorption at 280 nm. By this the kinetics of protein secretion can already be read from a curve during the collecting procedure, thus avoiding a multitude of small fractions otherwise necessary. Timing and size of the samples are adjusted individually according to the course of protein secretion and not to a rigid regimen. The method described is especially apt to investigations of pancreatic proteins and substances the secretion of which parallels that of protein; e. g. trypsinogen, calcium and zinc, however not sodium and potassium.

[Serum iron and serum copper in patients with lymphogranulomatosis].

The serum iron and serum copper level was determined in fifteen patients with lymphogranulomatosis before and during the course of the therapy. While the serum copper was increased in all stages, for the serum iron only in the stages III and IV a tendency to diminution was found. With obtaining the remission a significant increase of the serum iron and a significant decrease of the serum copper developed. The normalization of serum iron and serum copper suggests a remission, the dissociation of the two parameters an activity of the lymphogranulomatosis.

Improved visibility of black surgical needles in laparoscopic surgery.

Black needles were compared to silver needles for quantity of reflected light and ease of laparoscopic visualization. The black needles reflected less light and were thus more easily visualized during laparoscopic surgical procedures. The silver needles resembled a mirror in that they reflected incident light from both the light source and light from the surrounding tissue.
