Some reactions of 2-cyanomethyl-3-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with isothiocyanates. Antituberculotic activity of the obtained compounds.

Some reactions of 2-cyanomethyl-3-methyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with isothiocyanates were carried out. New derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with different substituents in 2-position and derivatives of the new pyrido-imidazo-thiazine ring system were synthesized. Most of the obtained compounds were tested for their in vitro antituberculotic activity.

Synthesis and some reactions of 2-acetylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine. Antituberculotic activity of the obtained compounds.

2-Acetylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine was prepared and its reactions with some aromatic amines and sulfur (Willgerodt-Kindler reaction), some aromatic aldehydes, some carboxylic acid hydrazides as well as thiourea were investigated. New imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives with different substituents in 2-position (N-arylthioamides, imines, alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones, hydrazido-hydrazones and aminothiazole) were obtained. Most of the synthesized compounds were tested in vitro for their antituberculotic activity.

Some reactions of 2-cyanomethylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with isothiocyanates. Antituberculotic activity of the obtained compounds.

Some reactions of 2-cyanomethylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with isothiocyanates were carried out. New derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine with different substituents in 2-position and derivatives of the new thiazolo-pyrido-imidazo-pyrimidine ring system were synthesized. Most of the obtained compounds were tested in vitro for their antituberculotic activity.

1-Methyl-1H-2-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridinecarboxylic acid and some of its derivatives with suspected antituberculotic activity.

2-Hydroxymethyl-1-methyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine was obtained and its oxidation was carried out. 1-Methyl-1H-2-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridinecarboxylic acid, its methyl ester, amide, nitrile, thioamide, amidoxime, hydrazide and hydrazidehydrazones were synthesized. Willgerodt-Kindler reaction of 1,2-dimethyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine was investigated. Some of the obtained compounds were tested for antituberculotic activity.

Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives of potential tuberculostatic activity. Part 1: Synthesis and quantitative structure-activity relationships.

New derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine and 9H-dipyrido-[1,2-a:3',2'-d]imidazole were synthesized. Antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis of selected compounds was determined. These data were combined with the corresponding bioactivity data previously generated for two other series of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridines. Analysis of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships [QSAR] was carried out using nonempirical structural descriptors. Hydrophobicity of the agents studied was found decisive for their activity. A QSAR equation was derived allowing rational design of active derivatives.

Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives of potential tuberculostatic activity, II: Synthesis and bioactivity of designed and some other 2-cyanomethylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives.

Based on the analysis of Quantitative Structure--Activity Relationships (QSAR) three representatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine derivatives of predicted high antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis were synthetized and tested bacteriologically. Excellent agreement of the predicted and experimentally observed bioactivity was noted. Additional new derivatives of 4-methyl-4H-2-cyanomethylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (7) and 2-(alpha-methylcyanomethyl)imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (22) were also synthesized and some of them were tested for tuberculostatic activity. The compounds synthesized according to a standard "trial and error" approach appeared generally inactive.

Characterization of the yellow pigment in the axanthic mutant of the Mexican axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum.

The yellow pigment observed in older axanthic (ax/ax) mutant Mexican axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) was analyzed by thin layer chromatography and by spectrofluorometry of its acetyl derivative. Ethanol extracts from the skin of axanthic animals were acetylated and the chloroform-soluble portion of the product mixture was compared with a chloroform solution of an authentic riboflavin tetraacetate standard prepared in the same manner. The pigment in these two solutions behaved identically on thin layer chromatograms and in fluorescent emission spectroscopy. This confirms that the yellow pigment seen in these genetically axanthic animals is riboflavin and, since it cannot be synthesized by the animal, must be derived from the diet.

3-(2-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine)propionic acid and some of its derivatives with suspected tuberculostatic activity.

The reactions of corresponding 2,3-diamino-pyridines with succinic anhydride were carried out. 3-(2-Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine)propionic acid and its N-1 and N-3 methyl derivatives were isolated. The acids obtained were converted into the esters, amides, nitriles, thioamides, amidoximes and hydrazides. Some of the synthesized compounds were tested for tuberculostatic activity.

Interdisciplinary roles in stroke care.

Care of the stroke patient presents a complex challenge to the interdisciplinary stroke team. The physical therapist, occupational therapist, and clinical social worker are important members of that team, each of whom contributes specialized knowledge and interventions in behalf of the patient. The physical therapist focuses on prevention of joint and tissue injury and retraining of lost motor skills. The occupational therapist considers the total patient in his or her environment and assists the patient in regaining or improving function in all areas of daily living. The clinical social worker concentrates on psychosocial assessment and intervention with the patient and family, aiding them in the adjustment process and planning for discharge. The nurse, in addition to playing a unique role in the delivery of nursing care to the stroke patient, is in a position to serve as coordinator of the interdisciplinary team. The nurse can facilitate the work of the physical and occupational therapists and the social worker by providing them with timely referrals, valuable assessment information and insights, and reinforcement of therapeutic activity while the patient is on the nursing unit. The keys to making the interdisciplinary team work for the maximal benefit of the patient are threefold: mutual respect and understanding among team members; ongoing coordination of efforts; and open communication between all team members, the patient, and the family. These elements are interrelated and essential if the interdisciplinary team is to be successful at meeting its ultimate goal: expert care of the total patient to achieve maximal independence.
