Trends in higher qualifications, 1971 to 1991.

This article has highlighted just some key features derived from a brief analysis of a small part of the statistics available from the tables on qualified manpower from the last three censuses. There is scope for wider analysis using the data on employment status, occupation and industry.

Suicides among immigrants from the Indian subcontinent.

Suicides in England and Wales among immigrants of Indian ethnic origin were analysed for the period 1970-78. There were excess suicides among young Indian women, these being disproportionately more among the married. Burning was a common method of suicide among Indian women. Suicide rates were low in Indian men and the Indian elderly. A large proportion of the male suicides were among doctors and dentists.

Patterns of mortality among migrants to England and Wales from the Indian subcontinent.

Causes of deaths in immigrants to England and Wales from the Indian subcontinent were assessed by ethnic subgroup. Observed and expected deaths for 1975-7 were aggregated to calculate proportional mortality ratios. Observed mortality due to infective and parasitic diseases, endocrine diseases (notably diabetes), diseases of the circulatory system (notably ischaemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, in males), and diseases of the digestive system (notably cirrhosis of the liver) exceeded expected mortality. Fewer than expected deaths were due to malignant neoplasms (notably lung cancer and chronic bronchitis); proportional mortality ratios for cancer were lower for Hindu groups than for Moslems and were lowest for Punjabis. Mortality due to ischaemic heart disease, high in all groups, was highest in Moslems. Significantly more Punjabi males died from cerebrovascular disease and cirrhosis of the liver. Diabetes was commonest among Gujaratis. The variation seen in the patterns of mortality in the different ethnic groups indicates the need for further epidemiological and health service research centred on these communities.

Further observations on the pathogenesis of acne.

The composition of the lipid of the forehead skin surface and the sebum excretion rate were determined in 217 subjects and controls. Acne was associated with an increase in serum excretion rate and in the squalene and wax and sterol esters in surface lipid. The changes in sebum excretion rate and squalene were statistically significant only in women, but acne in men was associated with a significant decrease in the free fatty acid content or surface lipid. The increased amounts of squalene and wax esters may lead to pilosebaceous obstruction in acne subjects. The increased sebum excretion rate in acne may ensure increased production of sebaceous triglyceride substrate available for lipolysis to irritant free fatty acids, which may then mediate the inflammatory changes of acne.
