MMPI correlates of looking left or right during mental tasks.

Correlated directionality of eye movements during mental tasks with MMPI profiles of 22 women and 16 men evaluated for mild neurotic disorder. Directionality of eye movements was correlated with MMPI scales at above chance levels, which suggests that the phenomenon of eye movement directionality relates to objective measures of personality.

Spatial vs. nonspatial reasoning ability in chronic schizophrenics.

Forty chronic male VA schizophrenics were matched with veterans who were seeking educational counseling, and both groups were tested on a 32-item measure of spatial and matched nonspatial reasoning questions. Schizophrenics were inferior in spatial reasoning not only when compared to controls, but also when compared to their own level of functioning on nonspatial reasoning, which suggests that spatial reasoning may be selectively more impaired than general reasoning ability in male chronic schizophrenics.

Psychological responses to genetic counseling for Down's syndrome.

To assess some of the emotional aspects of why parents seek genetic counseling and to measure the effect of genetic counseling in parents of children with Down's syndrome, pre- and post-counseling measures of anxiety, hostility, depression, and self-concept were obtained from 43 parents. Pre-counseling responses were compared with those of normative controls, and pre- and post-counseling scores were compared for areas of significant change. Anxiety, hostility and depression levels were significantly higher in parents seeking counseling than in normative controls (both P less than 0.002). Following genetic counseling, there was a significant lowering of anxiety (P less than 0.0005) and depression (P less than 0.05) along with a significant increase in overall self-concept (P less than 0.01). The study documents the importance of looking at factors related to emotional needs and self-image of parents in genetic counseling.

Development of spatial concepts in visually deprived children.

110 blind children in Grades 2 through 12 were matched with sighted controls for age, sex, and verbal reasoning ability. Spatial reasoning was compared with nonspatial reasoning ability for the two groups. At each age level, blind children were inferior to sighted children on spatial reasoning, although the two groups did not differ on nonspatial reasoning. Data further support the likelihood that certain interactions with the perceptual environment may be crucial to specific aspects of cognitive functioning in humans.

Differential correlates of Bender-Gestalt and Beery visual motor integration test for black and for white children.

The Bender-Gestalt and Beery Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration were administered to 58 black and 33 white children, aged 10-5, mean IQ of 81, of comparable socioeconomic class. WISC, Peabody, Raven Matrices, and Wide Range Achievement Test scores were correlated separately for each racial group. No test appeared to have unique value in helping alleviate possible racial differences in test performance, correlated with achievement test scores at levels exceeding correlation of the WISC with such scores.
