[Thermophilic endospores in the environment of a sugar mill in Jujuy].

Twenty six samples from green and scorched sugarcane stems and leaves, sugarmill air dust and raw sugar were analyzed. Thirty nine thermophilic bacilli strains were isolated. Physiological and morphological examinations were carried out according to Bergey's Manual. The strains were identified as B. licheniformis (66.7%), B. coagulans (17.9%), B. stearothermophilus (10.3%) y B. subtilis (5.1%).

[Penicillium-inhibiting yeasts].

The objective of this work was to establish the in vitro and in vivo inhibition of post-harvest pathogenic moulds by yeasts in order to make a biocontrol product. Post-harvest pathogenic moulds Penicillium digitatum, P. italicum, P. ulaiense, Phyllosticta sp., Galactomyces geotrichum and yeasts belonging to genera Brettanomyces, Candida, Cryptococcus, Kloeckera, Pichia, Rhodotorula were isolated from citrus fruits. Some yeasts strains were also isolated from other sources. The yeasts were identified by their macro and micro-morphology and physiological tests. The in vitro and in vivo activities against P. digitatum or P. ulaiense were different. Candida cantarellii and one strain of Pichia subpelliculosa produced a significant reduction of the lesion area caused by the pathogenic moulds P. digitatum and P. ulaiense, and could be used in a biocontrol product formulation.

[Fusarium species of the Quebrada de Lozano, Jujuy, Argentina].

A soil sampling was made in 50 cultivated places with horticultural and floral species where there were fusariosis records. For the isolation Bengal rose agar, peptone dichloran chloramphenicol agar and cayote dichloran chloramphenicol agar were used, being this last one, the more convenient. The isolates were identified as F. acuminatum, F. avenaceum, F. graminearum, F. merismoides, F. oxysporum, F. poae, F. proliferatum, F. semitectum, F. solani, F. subglutinans and F. sporotrichioides. It was proven the pathogenesis of F. acuminatum and F. proliferatum strains isolated from cultivated places with Cucurbita ficifolia and Vicia faba respectively, and of the strains of F. oxysporum obtained of soils with cultivations of Chrysanthemum leucanthemum, Ocimum basilicum and Zea mays. The F. merismoides, F. semitectum and F. subglutinans strains coming from places with these three vegetable species, were recovered as secondary invaders.

[Moulds and yeasts in bottled water and soft drinks].

Some damaged cartons of soft drinks and carbonated water were analyzed to detect the microorganisms that caused the damage. The contaminants of sugar used in the production of one of the drinks were also studied. The methods of Déak & Beuchat and Pitt & Hocking were used for the identification of yeasts and moulds, respectively. The agents of the spoilage of soft drinks were Debaryomyces hansenii, Debaryomyces polymorphus, Galactomyces geotrichum, Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Mucor circinelloides, Pichia anomala, Pichia jadinii, Pichia subpelliculosa, Rhodotorula glutinis and Zygosaccharomyces bailii. The microorganisms found in sugar were Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus penicilloides, Aspergillus versicolor, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, Mucor racemosus, P. anomala and Rhizopus stolonifer. Paecilomyces fulvus and Penicillium glabrum were observed in carbonated water.

[Mycotoxins of Fusarium spp. in rotten fruits from Cucurbita ficifolia].

Swine acute toxicosis with hemorrhages was recognized after feeding on decayed chayotes (C. ficifolia fruits). In order to elucidate the origin of this pathology, chayotes spoiled by fusaria were analyzed. The mycotoxins (T-2 toxin, fusarenon X) identified in decayed chayotes, the mice alterations and the isolated species (F. equiseli, F. graminearum, F. heterosporum, F. sambucinum var. coeruleum and F. solani), suggest that the effects on swine may be due to trichothecenes produced by fusaria within fruits, and that eating damaged chayotes is dangerous for animals.

[Penicillium ulaiense Hsieh, Su & Tzean, a post-harvest pathogen of citrus fruits in northeastern Argentina].

Fungi were isolated from the surface of decaying citrus fruits and their pathogenicity was determined. A few rotten fruits presented coremia of Penicillium ulaiense Hsieh, Su & Tzean, a new postharvest pathogen in Latin America. Penicillium digitatum (89 strains). Penicillium italicum (28). P. ulaiense (12) and Geotrichum candidum (11) were isolated from 129 samples of citrus fruits.

[Chitinase production by a strain of Streptomyces griseoruber isolated from the rhizosphere of sugar cane].

Twenty nine mesophilic and 19 thermophilic actinomycetes from sugar cane phyllosphere, rhizosphere and root-free soil were isolated. Twelve mesophilic and 7 thermophilic strains produced clear zones of hydrolyses on colloidal chitin agar and hydrolysed a chitin colloidal suspension. The rhizosphere strains were significantly more chitinolytic (p < 0.05) than the root-free soil strains. Streptomyces griseoruber 202 produced chitinase in colloidal chitin liquid medium with an activity of 108 micrograms of colloidal chitin hydrolysed/mg protein/hour, at pH 4.6 and 40 degrees C. This strain also produced chitinase in a medium with insect exoskeleton powder.
