[Platelet aggregation in whole blood and thromboxane B2 in type II and IV hyperlipidemia].

Platelets play an essential role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; by impedance method we valued in whole blood platelet aggregation induced by collagen in 40 healthy subjects and in 40 type II and type IV hyperlipemic subjects. Meanwhile by radioimmunoassay we dosed thromboxane B2, a stable product of thromboxane A2, released by platelets during activation, in 7 healthy subjects and 25 hyperlipemic subjects. The statistical investigation put in evidence that at higher plasmatic levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL correspond a greater platelet sensitivity to the aggregating agent, while the opposite happens to higher levels of HDL. The dosage of thromboxane B2 put in evidence a moderate increase in hyperlipemic as to healthy subjects, probably pointing to a state of platelet activity.

Treatment of neuroblastoma with 131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine: the experience of an Italian Study Group.

Eight patients affected by neuroblastoma were treated with 18 courses of 131I-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG). They all had been judged as "nonresponders" to conventional treatments. Six had stage IV disease: of these, five, with massive marrow involvement, had poor results, mainly because of marrow depression; one, whose marrow had been previously purged by chemotherapy, showed a decrease in blood cell counts but not to critical levels, thus allowing repeated treatments and some improvement. Two other cases had stage III disease, without marrow involvement. Both could receive repeated treatments without adverse effects on marrow and circulating blood cells; both could have surgical procedures when a significant neoplastic mass reduction had been induced by MIBG treatments. Almost all patients experienced reduction or disappearing of pain. Treatments were well tolerated.

Effect of swimming on protein degradation: 3-methylhistidine and creatinine excretion.

The effect of 5-km noncompetitive swimming (moderate exercise) and 2-km competitive speed swimming (intensive exercise) on protein breakdown was studied in a group of young male volunteers (16-20 years old) who followed a 3-MH-free diet throughout the study. Urinary 3-MH and creatinine were determined over a period of 24 and 48 hr as an index of protein degradation. Basal 3-MH levels in the two groups of swimmers were 2.85 and 3.07 mumole X kg-1 X day-1. Mean rates of 3-MH excretion were, respectively, 1.54 and 1.94 mumole X kg-1 X day-1 for the 48 hr after moderate exercise and the 24 hr after intensive exercise. The decrease in 3-MH urinary excretion was still evident when calculated as the urinary 3-MH-to-creatinine ratio.

Cimetidine increases HDL-cholesterol, particularly in the HDL3 subfraction.

Changes in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels were monitored in five patients treated with cimetidine for gastrointestinal disturbances. A progressive rise of HDL cholesterolemia, statistically significant after four weeks of treatment and highly so after eight weeks (+ 25.4%) was noted. The composition of HDL2 varied insignificantly, whereas a marked rise of HDL3 cholesterol (+ 23.4%) and protein (+ 13.9%) was observed at the end of eight weeks. Cimetidine seems to act in a similar way as microsomal enzyme inducers, in spite of the described inhibition of specific pathways in drug metabolism; recent evidence shows that cytochrome P-450 turnover is delayed after cimetidine. Whatever the mechanism(s), H2 receptors may play a role in the cholesterol removal from tissues.

In vitro binding of radioiodinated rat follicle-stimulating hormone to the testis of the mallard duck, Anas platyrhynchos l.

The binding of 125I-labelled rat FSH to homogenates and frozen sections of mallard duck testis was investigated. The equilibrium association constant (Ka) in the homogenates (8.5 x 10(9) M-1) was similar to those reported in other avian and mammalian species. Autoradiography suggested that the binding sites for the labelled hormone were localized in the tubular compartment.

[Acupuncture in the treatment of neuralgic syndromes of the facial region. Methodological studies and evaluation of the clinical results].

The A. present their experiences in the therapy of 274 facial neuralgias treated by acupuncture at the department of Oral Surgery of the University of Turin Medical School, between September 1973 and June 1976. The problems of a precise diagnosis and a research on the methods of treatment and statistical evaluation of the clinical results are presented with particular interest to the relation between acupuncture treatment and drug therapy.

[Papillary cancer of the thyroid: biological behaviour and therapeutic planning (author's transl)].

Out of about 600 thyroid tumors treated from 1956 to 1976, a series of 216 papillary cancers were selected at an hystological reevaluation. The correlation between survival rate and clinical features as well as extent of the primary tumor and presence of regional and distant metastases was investigated. An improvement in results may be expected by more extensive surgery on the thyroid, adequate post-operative X-ray and 131I radiation therapy, associated with suppression of TSH production in case of endocrine-dependent tumors.
