[Zona pellucida antigens in the human ovum: its importance in contraceptive strategies].

The zona pellucida (ZP) is the extracellular matrix surrounding the mammalian oocyte. This matrix consists of three families called ZP1, ZP2 and ZP3. These proteins suffer several posttraductional modifications to give them different immunological and functional properties. In mice has been demonstrated the important role of ZP3 as a receptor of sperm. In the past, research in this field was limited for the difficulty to get enough biological material from different mammalian species, especially from human sources. Recently, several laboratories have expressed ZP recombinant proteins, allowing the study of the proteins under physiologic and pathophysiological conditions, giving the possibility to utilize ZP as a contraceptive target.

MURCS association and hypothalamic anovulation.

A new case of MURCS association (mullerian duct aplasia, renal aplasia and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia) in an 18 year old patient is reported. In addition to other minor phenotypical features, hypothalamic chronic anovulation was documented. Basal concentrations of PRL, TSH, GH, F and E were within reference values for adult women. Challenges with TRH and ACTH evoked normal responses in terms of TSH and F respectively. Basal levels of LH and FSH and a LHRH stimulation test demonstrated dissociation of both gonadotrophins. Persistent progesterone values within follicular phase levels led us to the diagnosis of hypothalamic chronic anovulation which was confirmed by the induction of ovulation by clomiphene citrate. This finding shows the importance of a detailed endocrinological evaluation in patients with the MURCS association in order to prevent secondary disorders due to endocrinological impairment.

[Contribution to the intake of macro and micro nutrients exerted by moderate beer consumption].

OBJECTIVE: Moderate beer consumption can be part of a healthy diet, like the Mediterranean diet. The aim of the present study was to analyse the contribution a moderate beer consumption makes to energy and nutrient intake in Spanish healthy adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As part of a larger intervention study, dietary intake was measured by means of a 7-day food dietary record in 24 men and 22 women (age 34.18 +/- 5.80 years) twice: during the last week of the 30 days of complete alcohol abstinence and during the last week of 30 days of moderate beer consumption. Energy and nutrient content of food was analysed by means of the GEA program, based on the Spanish food composition tables. RESULTS: In women, moderate beer consumption increased significantly (p < 0.05) mean vitamin B6 (1.24 +/- 0.32 to 1.47 +/- 0.34 mg), B12 (3.87 +/- 1.46 to 5.58 +/- 2.76 microg), A (614.45 +/- 224.75 to 788.3 +/- 486.1 microg), and folate (139.5 +/- 39.88 to 168.25 +/- 56.32 microg) intake, whereas there was a decrease in mean iodine intake (327.1 +/- 148.4 to 281.2 +/- 135.02 microg). In men, mean vitamin B2 (1.64 +/- 0.62 to 1.91 +/- 0.46 mg), B6 (1.54 +/- 0.63 to 1.80 +/- 0.37 mg), niacin (30.01 +/- 8.13 to 34.78 +/- 6.26 mg) and folate (153.23 +/- 68.70 to 192.32 +/- 46.73 mg) intake also increased significantly. Energy, macronutrient and mineral intake had non-significant oscillations. CONCLUSION: Moderate beer consumption can improve diet quality in regard to B vitamins in healthy adults.

[Liver function tests].

The liver function tests are basic tools in the assessment of liver disease, they supply information about severity, progression of the illness and help to discriminate among treatment options. They are divided into two sections: biochemical test of liver function per se and serum markers of hepatobiliary disease. Although there are no new tests, liver transplant programs have stimulated development of metabolic capacity measurements to estimate liver function. At present the liver function tests, still are the best method to assess patients with liver diseases.

[Current concepts on prolactin physiology: molecular variants and mechanisms of action].

Prolactin is a polymorphic hormone with multiple biological functions. The versatility in the actions of prolactin depends on its structural polymorphism and perhaps on the feasibility of prolactin to be converted into different bioactive forms. In this review we attempt to summarize information concerning the synthesis, structure and mechanisms of action, including the heterogeneous nature of prolactin and its possible physiological significance in humans.

[Lymphatic metastases of osteosarcomas].

Osteosarcoma lymph node metastasis are uncommon. This paper shows two patients having osteoblastic osteosarcoma with loco-regional lymph node involvement. In the first case two inguinal and pelvic adenomegalies were found to have tumor metastasis two years and a half after initial diagnosis in a control radiological study. Currently the patient is alive three months after the lymphadenectomy. In the second case, several inguinal high density tumoral nodules were identified during the workup of primary tumor.

Monitoring of homocysteine and related compounds in blood by MEKC.

A reproducible, rapid procedure for the determination of homocysteine, cysteine, and glutathione in human blood by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) has been developed. Whole blood samples were deproteinized and centrifuged, and the supernatant was directly introduced into the capillary for analysis without further derivatization. Separations were performed using an uncoated capillary of 30 cm effective length and 50 microns i.d.; 20 mM phosphate, 20 mM borate, and 50 mM SDS, pH 9.00, as running buffer; and an applied voltage of 18 kV. On-line detection was carried out at 214 nm.
