Immunoblot analysis of the humoral immune response in primary cytomegalovirus infection.

Cytomegalovirus is a common infection in immunologically normal adults. It may cause an asymptomatic infection or may manifest symptomatically as heterophilic-negative mononucleosis. Studies of CMV infection in immunocompromised patients indicate that humoral immune response plays a role in modulating disease severity; however, the effect of antibodies to CMV in modifying disease expression and transmission in immunologically normal individuals has not been well characterized. Using immunoblot technology, we have demonstrated that immune serum from normal adults contains antibodies to at least 15 CMV-associated proteins and that there is strain-to-strain variation in the expression of these immunogens. The kinetics of the immune response were evaluated by using serial sera collected from normal adults after primary CMV infection; analysis of immunoblots of these sera identified one group of antibodies to CMV proteins that arise early and are stable over time, a second group that appear late after infection, and a third group that are variable among patients and over time.

Radioimmunoassay for herpes simplex virus.

Radioimmunoassay has been used for time in the detection of the Australia Antigen. In this experiment, radioimmunoassay with Iodine-125 (125I) permitted rapid detection of the presence of herpes simplex virus, type I, in vitro. This is a convenient technique for the detection of virus, which now requires laborious methods involving observation for the cytopathic effect of virus upon cultured cells.

Renal enlargement associated with infectious mononucleosis.

A 5 1/2 year old boy developed severe infectious mononucleosis (I.M.) with fever and hepatitis persisting for eight weeks. The diagnosis of I.M. was confirmed serologically by the development of a heterophile antibody and an ox cell hemolysin. During the acute illness, bilaterally enlarged kidneys were noted by intravenous urography even though the patient had no significant clinical or laboratory evidence of renal disease. Fifteen months following discharge, clinical and laboratory findings were normal and the kidneys had decreased markedly in size.

Distance education: joining forces to meet the challenge.

This paper describes a unique initiative between Manitoba Health and Brandon University to meet the current challenge of distance education for community health nurses employed by Manitoba Health. In November 1988, a strategy paper was approved, allowing Manitoba Health to contract with Brandon University to facilitate access to university courses. Incentives to encourage Manitoba Health employees to take advantage of these courses included reimbursement for work time and travel and hotel costs to attend associated laboratory sessions provided at off-campus sites (distance education). These incentives provided employees with evidence of tangible support for continuing education. This pioneering venture between two complex organizations demonstrated commitment to further education as well as the ability to initiate a collaborative enterprise.
