Radiographic evaluation of the facial complex.
The patient with maxillofacial trauma presents a diagnostic challenge to the evaluating physician. Radiologic evaluation begins only after initial assessment and stabilization of the patient. Despite the advent of new-generation CT scanners, conventional radiography remains the diagnostic test of choice for initial evaluation of the maxillofacial skeleton. One should understand and be aware of the clinical value and interpretation of the standard radiographic facial and mandibular series, and panoramic radiography. Plain films can serve as a springboard, giving direction and orientation to CT when this is indicated.
