Reinforcement of mate preference among hybridizing Heliconius butterflies.

Recent models of mate preference evolution suggest that direct selection on alleles at preference loci and correlated evolution of preference with locally adapted mating cues are more likely to drive the evolution of assortative mate preference than reinforcement. Mate preference evolution in mimetic Heliconius butterflies has been attributed to all three forms of selection, but here we show that reinforcement has been critical. By examining geographical variation in assortative mating and male mate preference among seven populations of three hybridizing Heliconius species from Costa Rica, we found pronounced character displacement of preference such that sexual isolation was enhanced in areas of interspecific contact. Of the different explanations for the evolution of assortative mate preference, only reinforcement is dependent on interspecific contact in this system. Thus, the observed pattern of reproductive character displacement of mate preference is best explained as a product of indirect selection generated by natural selection against nonmimetic hybrids.

Children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss: cognitive, academic, and social development.

Children with unilateral loss have been considered to have few, if any, communication or academic difficulties. This study was designed to evaluate the academic achievement, cognitive ability, psycholinguistic, and social skills of a group of 25 monaurally hearing-impaired compared with 25 nonhearing-impaired children. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups on cognitive or self-concept measures. However, the unilateral group had significantly lower scores on academic tests of word recognition, spelling, and language. The unilateral group was more likely to have repeated a grade, needed special education resource help, or additional tutoring in school. Within the unilateral group, children with severe-to-profound hearing loss had significantly lower WISC-R full scale I.Q.s as compared to the group with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The results of this study suggest that monaural deafness, especially when severe to profound, may be associated with cognitive and academic deficits, as well as secondary behavioral adjustment problems.

Physical measurements of 9- to 12-year-old children in Kansas.

Measurements of height, weight, triceps, skinfold, and arm circumference were obtained from 3,231 Kansas children 9 to 12 years old as part of the Nutrition Education and Training Needs Assessment Project. Data were collected in 97 schools randomly selected throughout the state. Participating fifth grade students were divided equally between boys and girls; approximately 95% were Caucasian, 3.4% were black, and the remainder were from other ethnic groups, a profile similar to that of the Kansas population. Girls and boys in the study sample tended to be taller and to weigh more than girls and boys of similar age in national studies. Because of adolescent growth spurts, which differ among individuals, the data would need to be interpreted with caution if individual students' growth patterns were being assessed. Kansas girls and boys also tended to have larger triceps skinfold and arm fat area measurements than their counterparts in the NHANES I study. Those data, coupled with the tendency toward greater weight, suggested a greater incidence of overweight among Kansas children than among elementary school children nationally.

Establishing the need for nutrition education: IV. Evaluation of dietary intakes of elementary school children.

Levels of energy intake and selected nutrients in the diets of elementary school children, as observed in a Kansas Nutrition Education and Training Program needs assessment project, are reported. For almost half of the girls and boys in the study, energy intakes exceeded 100% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA); for most of the students, protein intakes exceeded 125% of the RDA. Magnesium, iron, and vitamin B6 were the nutrients most limiting in the diets. Implications for nutrition education are discussed.

Pollen feeding and reproductive biology of heliconius butterflies.

Butterflies of the neotropical Genus Heliconius feed on pollen. This is the first known instance in butterflies of a habit that is well known for other insects. The butterflies remove amino acids and proteins from pollen; this feeding innovation plays a role in the reproductive and population biology of these insects. It is suggested that other animals may use pollen in a similar fashion.
