Being informed: undergoing radiation therapy.

This article aims to give insight into the experience of an intensive course of radiation therapy and relate the findings to the nurses working with individuals receiving radiation therapy. The purpose of this article is to describe and interpret the experiences of individuals undergoing radiation therapy in the cancer center of a large teaching hospital. The philosophic basis of this study was hermeneutic phenomenology and draws on the experiences described by 20 individuals undergoing radiation therapy through a series of unstructured interviews. The findings indicate that there are deficits in the care delivered in some radiation therapy departments. Information and preparation for radiation therapy are often inadequate or do not meet the needs of the individuals in this study. Participants continue to adopt a "sick" or "patient" role even though they attend treatments on an outpatient basis and are required to manage their own care, which results in a feeling of not being in control. Moreover, the coping styles of the participants vary and are not clearly identified and assisted by relevant health professionals. Care is not always well coordinated between the various health professionals, resulting in the patient receiving mixed or confusing messages about their treatments.

Attraction of adult Rhagoletis indifferens (Diptera: Tephritidae) to unbaited and odor-baited red spheres and yellow rectangles.

Five sizes of red spheres (4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cm diameter) and 2 orientations of yellow rectangles (vertical and V) were evaluated as unbaited sticky-coated traps for western cherry fruit flies, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran, in unmanaged cherry trees in Washington and Oregon. Red spheres that were 10 cm in diameter attracted more flies than red spheres that were 8 or 12 cm in diameter and significantly more flies than 4- or 6-cm spheres and yellow rectangles of either orientation. In a 2nd test, red spheres (10 cm diameter) baited with ammonium carbonate alone or ammonium carbonate plus putrescine attracted significantly more R. indifferens than similar spheres baited with ammonium acetate alone, putrescine alone, 3-methyl-1-butanol alone, or combinations of these substances. In a 3rd test, vertical yellow rectangles baited with ammonium carbonate alone attracted numerically more R. indifferens than any of the aforementioned substances alone or in combination. We discuss the potential value of 10-cm red spheres baited with ammonium carbonate for monitoring and direct control of R. indifferens.

Casemix: challenges for nursing care.

An Australia-wide patient classification system for nursing is urgently needed as the health system attempts to develop benchmarks against which to measure and compare services. Standardised measures of demand for nursing care must be developed to allow appropriate reimbursement and to act as proxies for illness severity. Nurses need to identify the outcomes that measure the nursing contribution to episodes of care, and assist in developing outcome goals reflecting the efficacy of treatment and the quality of care. A system of measuring nursing requirements and costs of early discharge and coordinated care programs is required. It must be consistent with nursing classifications and hospital costing systems.

Pathogenicity of antigenic variants of Newcastle disease virus Italian strain selected with monoclonal antibodies.

Antigenic variants of the Italian strain of NDV were selected using monoclonal antibodies directed against the HN and F proteins of Italian virus. Antigenic mapping of the HN and F proteins using variant viruses in cross neutralization tests revealed the presence of at least two different epitopes on HN and four epitopes on F protein. Immunoselected variant viruses were demonstrated to have different intravenous pathogenicity index than the parental Italian virus.

Lithium-carbamazepine neurotoxicity and risk factors.

Five rapid-cycling manic patients developed neurotoxic syndromes when treated with a combination of lithium and carbamazepine, although all five had therapeutic plasma levels of both drugs. The risk factors for development of neurotoxicity with this drug combination are discussed.
