Development of cancer prevention and control initiatives in a state health agency: the New York experience.

The public health response to cancer in the New York State Department of Health has evolved over many years. A number of organizational units contribute to surveillance and monitoring, quality assurance, policy analysis and advocacy, education, service delivery, and evaluation components. Extensive cooperation with health professionals and consumers outside of state government is also essential.

Changes in body composition, diet, and strength of bodybuilders during the 12 weeks prior to competition.

The purpose of this study was to monitor body composition, diet, and strength in male bodybuilders (No. 6) during the 12 weeks prior to competition. Data were collected every third week and analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA (p < 0.05). Significant decreases (p < 0.01) were found in body mass (-7.3 kg) and hydrostatically determined percent fat (-5.0%), while fat-free mass showed little change. All 7 skinfold sites were reduced significantly (p < 0.01) across the 12 weeks. Ultrasound scan revealed a significant decrease in skin thickness at the biceps (p < 0.01), but no change in biceps thickness. Circumferences decreased significantly at all sites (p < 0.05) except the chest. The greatest decreases were at the waist (-6.9 cm) and hips (-4.3 cm). Maximal isometric dead-lift force decreased significantly (p < 0.05) across time (-129 N). In comparison to off-season, both higher resistance and aerobic training volumes were found during pre-competition. Nutritional analyses showed significant reductions (p < 0.05) in total kilocalories, protein, fat, and cholesterol intakes. Vitamin and mineral intakes exceeded the RDAs. The data indicate the pre-competition practices were effective in reducing subcutaneous fat stores while maintaining muscle. Finally, the onset of the pre-competition phase resulted in strength loss.

Quality assurance in cytology: New York State Proficiency Testing Program.

The New York State Proficiency Testing Program in Cytology is a three-part program consisting of an annual inspection, biennial proficiency tests, and ongoing education programs. Clinical laboratory consultants inspect laboratories' internal quality control and compliance with regulatory standards. In the proficiency test, cytotechnologists screen test slides and cytopathologists make final diagnostic interpretations. The program promotes professional competence through continuing educational courses and remedial training. Data from a 1988 study that examined test results from the July 1, 1986 to June 30, 1988 test period show that 93.9% of test participants agreed with the correct reference answer.

Bandeiraea simplicifolia I isolectins reveal a development sequential relationship.

We have analyzed the distribution of the five tetrameric Bandeiraea simplicifolia I isolectins (A4, A3b, A2B2, AB3, B4) isolated by melibionate Bio-Gel affinity chromatography from 168 single seeds gathered in Ghana from known trees and pods. Alkaline, nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was employed to analyze the distribution of the five isolectins. The polyacrylamide gels were scanned at 625 nm and the peak height corresponding to each isolectin was measured and expressed as a percentage of the total of peak height. Principal components analysis of the correlations among the percentages indicated a sequential relationship among the five isolectins with the concentrations of B4 and A4 inversely related. Further statistical analyses indicated that although the distribution of isolectins in each seed was unique, seeds gathered from the same tree were more similar than seeds gathered from different trees. Several causes of this sequential relationship are discussed.
