Intravenous injections of the blood plasma iodinated lipoproteins (LP) to rats led to the marker binding and penetration into the adrenal cells. The most intensive absorption was specific to LPs of high density (LPHD) and, to a lesser degree, to LPs of low and very low density (LPLD, LPVLD). Intensive exercises produced an enhanced LPHD accumulation and a reduced LPLD level in the adrenal tissues. During subcellular fractionation of the adrenals LPVLDs were uniformly distributed among cellular organelles, LPLDs were accumulated in lysosomes and cytosol, whereas a large LPHD amount was collected in the small cytoplasmic membranes. The exercises led to an increase in LPHD binding with the fraction of small cytoplasmic membranes. The role of different LP classes in steroidogenesis processes is discussed. The differences, found in the absorption extent and localization of LP labelled, allowed one to suggest that the pathways of intracellular metabolism of several LP classes in the rat adrenals are distinctive.

The erythrocytes transketolase activity and the TDP-effect were determined in persons residing in the regions beyond the polar circle and these demonstrated a moderate thiamine deficiency. The daily thiamine intake with food in the examined did not exceed 1.5 mg, the thiamine-diphosphate of the epoenzyme amounting to 90 per cent. Following introduction of various pharmacological preparations of vitamin B1 for a space of 2 weeks a somewhat greater transketolase activity and a diminution of the TDP-effect were observed. Administration of cocarboxylase and vitamin B1 with Mg and gelatin more favourable changes were obtained. Some macro- and micro-elements were found to exercise a positive effect on the thiamine assimilation by the tissues. The results obtained indicate that the daily thiamine requirement (allowance) of man in the North does not surpass 1.5-2.0 mg. To control hypovitaminoses in the North it is more effective to use natural vitamin-carriers rather than pharmacological preparations of vitamin B1.
Changes in serum lipoprotein pattern and in total content of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) were studied in blood and liver tissues of rats during physical exercise and restoration. Physical training induced synthesis of liver lipoproteins, in particular of their protein components. An initial period of lipoprotein synthesis in the liver tissue was preceded by transient activation of lysosomes in hepatocytes and their translocation towards nuclei. When lysosome translocation was depressed by vinblastine or colchicine injected 1 h before the physical exercise, an increase in total amount of LDL and VLDL fractions in liver and blood could not be observed. The inhibition of lysosomal proteolytic activity by hordox also impaired an increase in blood and liver lipoproteins. The data obtained suggest that activation of lysosomes and their translocation towards nuclei are important for induction of lipoprotein synthesis in liver tissue during physical exercise.

Administration to rabbits of hydrocortisone (8 mg/kg) and adrenaline (0.3 ml of 0.1% solution) during mild dithizone diabetes simulated hormonal reconstructions of the body exposed to stress. Activation of the cellular lysosomal apparatus occurs in such hormonal situation. In the liver this in manifested by an increase in the acid phosphatase, cathepside D, and beta-glucosidase free activity and by reduction in the resistance of lysosomal membranes to the effect of osmotic shock. Increase in the total acid hydrolase activity was detected in the cardiac and skeletal muscles.
Direct densimetry at 252.5 microns of cortisol on chromatographic plates with a thin silica gel layer provides the best results in comparison with fluorimetry, that includes pretreatment of plates with tetrazole reagent. Accuracy, sensitivity and reproducibility of the method were examined with reference to quantitative determination of the blood serum corticosterone of rats. Owing to a high sensitivity the direct densimetry technique in reflected light at 252.5 microns proved suitable for quantitative evaluation of the steroid spectrum in extracts from the rat adrenal incubate sections and the human blood serum. 3 ml of the blood serum is required for analysis performance.

Metabolic changes in newcomers to the Asiatic North have been revealed during their adaptation to a complex of the climatic and geographic factors of high latitudes. The changes were marked by making the most of lipids and less utilization of carbohydrates in energy supply to the adaptation processes. An important role of proteins in energy supply is discussed with emphasis on the changes in vitamin metabolism. The specificity of metabolic changes during adaptation is not taken into account in the nutrition program of the newcomers. This leads to the development of disadaptation shifts in the body. An important role of nutrition in adaptation of both the newcomers and aborigines of Siberia and North is suggested. The many-century experience gained in the nutrition of aborigines should be regarded in the newcomers' nutrition programs that are recommended to be based on protein-lipid diets.
In the course of human adaptation to the climatic and geographic factors, there was a stable reduction of thiamine concentration in blood and urine. The activity of red cell transketolase did not change or slightly rose. The changes in TDF effect were insignificant thus pointing to the absence of hypovitaminosis. Intensive vitamin therapy did not lead to an essential increase in thiamine blood concentration which made up 2.0--2.5 micrograms % and as usual remained lower than generally accepted rates. The main amount of thiamine was excreted with urine. TDF effect did not exceed 4--8%. The results obtained indicate high transketolase saturation with thiamine diphosphate with low thiamine concentration in blood. The changes in carbohydrate-lipid metabolism were characterized by the inhibition of glycolytic processes and the increased blood content of transport fat. Thus the changes in thiamine correlate with the diminution of the energy role of carbohydrates in man in the Antarctic.
The North is a part of the Earth's biosphere, which is connected with other climatic and geographical regions via the common geological and climatic processes. The severe natural conditions make the North as an ecological system easily vulnerable to anthropogeneous factors. In this connection, the industrial development of the northern areas should rely on low-waste and ecologically pure technologies. The paper outlines the principles of the system interaction of social production, health services, and social security. The medical and scientific problems in the development of the Far North by man are formulated in general.
A modified method is described for estimation of hexokinase isoenzymes by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The best conditions for detection of hexokinase activity were developed using immobilization of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenas: in gel, utilization of riboflavin as a catalyst of polymerization and stabilization by glucose. The method is simple, highly reproducible, comparatively rapid and economically reasonable.
Importance of nonparenchymal liver cells for regulation of protein synthesis in hepatocytes was studied using liver cell culture and co-culture. The rate of protein synthesis was increased in hepatocytes during simultaneous cultivation of these cells with nonparenchymal elements. Activation of protein synthesis was distinctly higher in hepatocytes co-cultivated with nonparenchymal liver cells isolated from liver tissue of rats stimulated by bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Similar results were obtained after cultivation of hepatocytes in the conditioned medium containing nonparenchymal liver cells treated with lipopolysaccharide, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and hydrocortisone. The data obtained suggest that nonparenchymal liver cells, especially Kupffer cells, contributed to regulation of protein synthesis in hepatocytes. The cooperative effect of HDL and glucocorticoids in stimulation of the mononuclear phagocytes system appears to be mainly responsible for augmented expression of genes in hepatocytes.
Under the same flight conditions hemoglobin content as well as amounts of red and white blood cells have been shown to be less while reticulocyte count and coagulation rate higher in operators with elevated levels of anxiety than in their counterparts. During geomagnetic disturbances hemoglobin content and red and white blood cell counts in these subjects have been reduced to even greater extent. Microcirculatory homeostasis was activated, coagulation time reduced and reticulocyte count grew larger. Geomagnetic disturbances did not cause any alterations in blood pictures of the flight operators with low levels of anxiety while (under standard flight conditions) their hemoglobin, red and white blood cell counts were higher than in operators with elevated anxiety implicating greater compensatory potentialities of the homeostatic systems.
As shown earlier, the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) plays an important role in regulation of protein synthesis in different rat tissues. In vivo stimulation of MPS by lipopolysaccharide from Bacillus prodigiosum caused a significant increase of protein synthesis in the liver, lungs, adrenal glands, thymus, spleen and bone marrow. The results obtained suggest that MPS is involved in the regulation of tissue regenerative process at the level of physiological state.
