Oogenesis in antenatal development in man.

Ninety-seven female embryos and foetuses aged 6-40 weeks were quantitatively analyzed for germ cell development, mitotic activity in the ovary, and dynamics of chromosome transformations in oocytes at the stages of meiotic prophase I and follicle genesis. For the first time, chronology of oocytes dynamics at the stage of the preleptotene chromosome condensation and decondensation is described. Oocytes at the leptotene stage occur in embryos aged 10-11 weeks. Oocyte transfer at the zygotene and pachytene stages starts by 10.5-11 and 11.5-13 weeks, respectively. Their number is maximum after 26 weeks and by the 40th week decreases to just single oocytes. The first oocytes at the diplotene stage appear in foetuses aged 11.5-12 weeks. Oocyte transition to the dictyotene stage is observed in single oocytes after 16 weeks of development, but active bivalent decondensation begins after 26 weeks. The formation of a follicular layer takes place not earlier than around the oocyte at the diplotene stage. Follicle genesis occurs after 11-12 weeks. Transformation of primordial follicles into primary ones is intensified after 19-20 weeks. By the moment of birth, the majority of oocytes in the human ovary are contained in primary follicles, and only a few are contained in primordial ones. The number of secondary and tertiary antral follicles is extremely small. The dynamics of degeneration of germ cells throughout intra-uterine development is also described.

[Extrusion of nucleolus-like bodies from the nuclei of human oocytes].

A morphological and cytochemical analysis of nucleolus-like bodies extruded in antenatal human development phase from the nucleus into the oocyte cytoplasm has been carried out, and the quantitative dynamics of this phenomenon is evaluated. The nucleolus-like bodies are Feulgen-negative, pyroninophilic, and measuring 4-5 micron in diameter. These bodies migrate from the nuclei of oogonia and oocytes at all the meiotic prophase 1 stages, from the preleptotene chromosome condensation stage on. The frequency of extrusion of nucleolus-like bodies at the diplotene stage is lower than that at the dictyatene stage.

Cell Cycle↗

[Dynamics of chromosome rearrangements in the meiotic prophase in human oogenesis].

A quantitative analysis of germ cell population development in human female embryonic gonads has been carried out, with special attention being paid to chromosomal changes in the prophase of the first meiotic division. 97 embryos at the age of 6 to 40 weeks were investigated. The morphology of nuclei at different prophase stages is described, temporal dynamics of all the stages is presented, dynamics of germ cell degeneration is outlined.

[Development of the human ovary in the prenatal period].

In 97 embryos and fetuses (6--40-week-old) quantitative analysis of the ovarian growth, dynamic of development of sex cell population and their mitotic activity have been morphologically studied during prenatal development. It has been demonstrated that sex differentiation of the ovaries takes place at the beginning of the 6th week. Connective tissue cords of the cortical substance stroma have been stated to appear in 6-week-old embryos, develop centrifugally and reach covering epithelium by the 19th--20th week of embryogenesis. Connective tissue elements of the ovarian tunica albuginea appear on the 27th week and by the 40th week the ovarian tunica albuginea is distinctly seen. Formation of the medulary substance germ beginning on the 6th--7th week has been observed when the gonade is separated from mesonephros and mesovarium is formed. Maximal mitotic activity in the oogonium occurs on the 11th -- 26th weeks. During the same period (the 11th -- 17th weeks) the relative amount of germ cells reaches its maximum, and most of oocytes achieve the meiotic prophase. After the 17th week of the intrauterine development, an intensive proliferation of the ovarian somatic elements and folliculogenesis are observed.

Cell Differentiation↗

[Folliculogenesis in the prenatal period of human development].

Quantitative analysis of the follicular formation has been performed in ovaries of 97 human embryos and fetuses (6--40-week-old). The first oocytes at the stage of diplotene appear in 11.5--12-week-old fetuses. Primordial follicles are formed around the oocyte as early as the stage of diplotene. Follicles are intensively formed after the 14th--15th week. Single primordial follicles begin to transform into the growing primary ones in 17-week-old fetuses and the process becomes active after the 19th--20th week of the development. As a rule, the oocyte reaches the stage of dictyotene only after the follicle has transformed into the primary one. By the time of birth most of oocytes are enclosed by the primary, and in less number--by the primordial follicles. The number of secondary and tertiary cavitary follicles is small. The formation rate of follicles with binuclear oocytes and that of polyoocytic follicles is stated. The data on quantitative analysis of oocyte degeneration at the stages of diplotene and dictyotene are presented.
