[Sleep-wake rhythm disorders in the framework of a Diogenes syndrome. Improvement in sleep architecture using supportive treatment with zolpidem].

In a 72-year-old man suffering from the Diogenes syndrome, but with no other pathologies (no dementia, no underlying depression), marked disorders in the sleep-wake rhythm developed. Treatment with zolpidem brought about an improvement in the sleep architecture. Psychotherapy, largely behavioral treatment, resulted in partial reintegration of the patient.

[Treatment of sleep disorders in the elderly with zolpidem. Results of sleep polygraphy in 3 elderly patients with depressive neuroses].

Three elderly patients with depressive neuroses and sleep disorders were treated over a period of 20 days with a nocturnal dose of 10 mg zolpidem, a new type of hypnotic. Prior to treatment, after 1 and after 20 days, as well as on the first post-treatment day, polygraphic studies were made during sleep. In addition, vigilance was tested using the Quatember and Maly tests, and diurnal wellbeing checked by means of a questionnaire. The polygraphic results revealed that all major sleep parameters improved under treatment and that no rebound occurred on the first post-treatment day. No negative effects on diurnal wellbeing were registered.

[Polygraphic recording of sleep in the aged. An EEG study].

Polygraphic recordings during sleep were performed on 18 elderly persons (age range: 64-100 years). These evaluations were carried out on two consecutive nights in our sleep laboratory. The purpose of this study was to supplement the existing evaluations that were performed in the past two decades and those performed in Anglo-American countries. In addition, we established our own standards for a sleep laboratory in our clinic, and arrived at a comparison with existing results and a critical evaluation of them.
