[Hyperbaric oxygenation as a part of the treatment of chronic ulcerohemorrhagic colitis].

34 patients with chronic ulcerohemorrhagic colitis in exacerbation were treated with hyperbaric oxygenation in addition to the routine therapy. Two chambers model "Dräger" 1000 and 1200 were used. The total course of treatment included 10-12 seances with 60-75 min. exposition each. All patients improved significantly after the first 5-6 seances. The results of the treatment back up the use of hyperbaric oxygenation in the treatment of chronic ulcerohemorrhagic colitis.

[Chemical composition of poultry livers].

Investigations were carried out on the basic and mineral composition of the liver of slaughtered birds. It was found that the water content of the liver depended on the age and sex, with broilers it being 73.09 g%, with laying hens--72.56 g%, and with cocks--70.62 g%. Proteins had highest percent in the liver of cocks, followed by those in the liver of hens, geese, broilers, and turkeys. The content of fats was highest in the liver of turkey, and in a descending order followed geese, broilers, hens, and cocks. Mineral salts varied from 1.20 to 1.35 g%; highest amounts of sodium were found in the liver of broilers, while highest levels of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and copper were established in the liver of turkeys.

[Effect of slaughterhouse capacity on the hygienic production of beef].

Studied was the effect of the capacity of a meat producing enterprise on the hygiene in the production of beef. It was found that beef produced at the small regional slaughterhouses remained 1.29 to 3.5 times more strongly contaminated with organisms than the meat obtained at export meat combines. The distribution of the total number of organisms, mesophiles, psychrophiles, coli forms, proteolytic ones, staphylococci, yeasts, and moulds on the surface of carcasses was not following a definite pattern. The region of the thigh was shown to be most contaminated. First among the surface microflora of the slaughtered cattle ranked mesophiles (up to 74.79 per cent), followed by psychrophiles (up to 55.69 per cent).

[Microbiological studies of slaughterhouse broilers].

Studied were a total of 187 broilers after the completion of their slaughter processing, with special reference to the correlation between the weight and the quality of the slaughtered birds and their bacterial contamination. It was found that with the increase in the weight of the slaughtered and processed broilers the total bacterial count with them progressively dropped. The quality of the slaughtered broilers was found to correlate with their bacterial contamination. Least contaminated were broilers of first quality, and the broilers of second quality and those that were not standard were 2.2 and 19.6 times more strongly contaminated, respectively. The microbiologic study of slaughtered broilers varying in weight and quality revealed that the count of coliforms was highest followed by that of the proteolytic organisms and staphylococci.

[Weight and chemical makeup of the liver of geese during fattening].

Experiments were carried out with regard to certain changes in the liver of geese during their fattening period. The observations were made before the fattening of the geese, namely on the 5th , 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 33rd days of the fattening. It was established that during the fattening period the weight of the liver was constantly increasing, especially between the 20th and 25th days. During the fattening their water contents decreased. This tendency was most pronounced after the period of pecking was over. As the process of fattening advanced, the dry substance in the liver increased and the highest increase (by 10.21%) was observed during the interval between the 15th and 20th days. The percentage of the total lipids in the liver increased progressively up to 18.9 times. In the case of unfattened geese the satiated free butyric acids prevailed. In the process of fattening their quantity decreased, whereas that of the unsatiated butyric acids increased.

[Comparative evaluation between the impedance method and the Fick method for determining cardiac minute volume].

The authors determined the minute heart volume, according to Fick method with right cardiac catheterization of 20 healthy youths. With the comparison of the results obtained, the differences were within the limits of +/- 10, and in almost half of the examined-- +/- 5%. The relatively small discrepancies in the values obtained, suggest that the impedence-method proves to be a reliable method for bloodless determination of minute heart volume.

[Hemodynamic and phase characteristics of the impedance cardiogram].

The authors realized synchronous records of impedance--cardiogram with PCG, ECG and the curves of the pressure within the separate cardio-vascular segments. That enables them to make a phase characteristic of the separate parts of impedance-cardiographic curve, thus establishing that the latter is synchronized with the mechanics of the left ventricle.

[Microbiological studies of brynza cheese].

Studies on the changes occurring in the microflora at the time of 45-day ripening and 4-month storage of cheese produced in pitchers (earthen jugs) were performed. It was established that at the beginning of the ripening period the total number of microorganisms as well as the number of lactic acid producing microorganisms increases, but after the 15th day of ripening until the end of storage their number diminishes. At the time of ripening and storage of cheese curdled in pitchers, coliform bacteria diminish progressively. In case cheese curd is used, these bacteria vanish as soon as ripening comes to an end, while in case lactic acid or butter curd is used they vanish during the 1st month of storage. In spontaneously curdled cheese coliform bacteria vanish during the third month of storage. At the time of cheese ripening in a pitcher the yeast quantity increases, while during storage it varies. At the time of ripening fungae get into the cheese produced in pitchers and their number increases along with the ripening process.

[Effect of low temperatures on the count and virulence of salmonellae in slaughtered poultry].

Studied was the effect of shock freezing at -34 degrees C and the storing of slaughtered birds at -18 degrees C up to six months on the survival and the change in the virulence of Salmonella typhimurium, S. meleagridis, and S. gallinarum-pullorum. It was established that the number of the tested Salmonella species decreased steadily, however, no complete devitalizing was attained. The Salmonella count was most intensely reduced in the first fifteen days of storing. Most resistant to the effect of low temperature were S. typhimurium organisms, and least resistant was S. meleagridis. It was found that the virulence of the tested Salmonella strains gradually dropped, the amount of disappearing organisms correlating with the drop of their virulence.

[Hemodynamic classification of 2d-stage mitral stenosis].

Thirty patients with mitral stenosis were examined according to the Bakulev-Damir classification during right heart catheterization at rest, with loading and during the rehabilitation period. The relationships found between the extent of the resistance at rest and the character of the degree of its changes at loading, reflecting the stenosis evolution, provide grounds for the differentiation of four stages, four substages resp., in its classification, namely: Second A substage with sinus rhythm, without included protective reaction of a. Pulmonalis periphery at rest, with markedly manifested peripheral vasodilation with loading. Second B substage with sinus rhythm, protective reaction of a. Pulmonalis periphery at rest included to a lesser degree, excluded loading, with a following manifested vasodilation. Second C substage with absolute arrhythmia, included to a lesser degree protective reaction of a. Pulmonalis periphery at rest, excluded with loading, with a following slighter vasodilation. Second D substage with sinus rhythm, included protective reaction at a. Pulmonalis periphery at rest, considerably intensified with loading. The extent and dynamics of the rest of the values studied are followed up in the separate stenosis substages aiming at their complete hemodynamic characterization. The pathogenetic mechanism of the pulmonary edema in the second stenosis stage is analyzed, not rarely conditioning the clinical pardox "minor stenosis of mitral valve with menacing pulmonary edemas".

[Experimental control of the dye dilution method of measuring telediastolic ventricular volume by the steps in the curve of indicator "washing"].

After a brief discussion on the basis of the dilution method for determination of telediastolic volume (TDV) of the ventricles, the authors described the results from their own experimental studies on 8 nonbred dogs, on whom 186 curves of indicator "washing" (of the dye "Cardiogreen" were recorded, presented on 2 tables. The results showed that the measurements should be made by means of the later steps of the curves. TDV and accordingly the relative stroke volume of both ventricles differed slightly. The smaller values, according to the authors, of TDV of the left ventricle in comparison with the right ventricle revealed that the size of the relative stroke voluem depended both on the mechanism of Starling and on the contractility of the ventricles.

[Model of formation of chronic volume loading in the right heart].

The authors describe an experimental model for examining the changes occuring in the haemodynamics of the small circuit as a result of created artificial defect of the interatrial septum. An original operative technique is used, by which the complete clamping of the right lung artery and vera is avoided and lung complications are prevented. The performed control haemodynamic studies up to one vear after the operation support the efficiency of the proposed model.

[Routes of pathogenic staphylococcal contamination of slaughter poultry].

The contamination of birds with pathogenic staphylococci was followed up during their slaughter handling and trimming at two poultry-dressing houses. It was found that water cooling and evisceration were mostly contributing to contamination. Taking part in the dissemination of Staphylococcus infection were also the female workers on the slaughter belt, especially those that had wounds on their hands. Studied were the properties of a total of 881 strains of staphylococci, 43.35 per cent of them being defined as Staph. aureus, and 56.64 per cent--as Staph. edidermidis.
