Quality of life in osteosarcoma survivors.

Charts of 89 osteosarcoma survivors from Massachusetts General Hospital and The Children's Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Center, who had received primary treatment more than 1 year previously and had no evidence of disease, were reviewed. Sixty-two patients, mean 12 years from diagnosis, agreed to structured interviews. Rates of psychopathology did not differ significantly from the general population. High distress was noted in 13%. Twenty-three normal progeny had been born postchemotherapy to eight women and the wives of five male patients. One pregnancy was complicated by doxorubicin-induced cardiac toxicity. Only two with previous childhood tumors believed themselves infertile. All felt the effort to save the limb was worthwhile. In most, ongoing pain was mild; phantom pain and neuralgia common. Most survivors were in good mental and physical health with the capacity to bear children.

Detection of aneuploidy and polyploidy in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma by computer video image analysis.

Thirty-six cases of histologically intermediate and low grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, classified according to the International Working Formulation, were examined using image analysis cytometry. Aneuploidy was detected in 21 cases (58%). No significant difference in either the incidence or extent of aneuploidy was seen for cases that entered remission when compared to cases that did not. Bone marrow examinations, by either aspiration or trephine biopsy, were conducted on 34 cases, with 11 showing lymphocytic infiltration. Aneuploidy was detected in 6 of the 11 cases having bone marrow involvement, while 5 cases with bone marrow infiltration were euploid. Polyploid cell distributions were detected in 3 cases, and the remaining 12 cases were diploid. The biologic significance of polyploidy among non-Hodgkin's lymphomas is not well understood, and its detection is limited to static techniques for DNA quantitation. With further investigation, awareness of its presence may reveal some insight into the clonal evolution of this neoplasm.

Humoral concepts of mental illness in India.

Based on interviews with patients at three allopathic psychiatric clinics in Bombay, Bangalore and Varanasi, employing a preliminary version of the Explanatory Model Interview for Classification (EMIC) to elicit indigenous explanations of illness and patterns of prior help seeking, we discuss popular humoral theories of mental disorder. Even though most laypersons are unfamiliar with the content of the classical treatises of Ayurveda, the humoral traditions which they represent influence current perceptions. Case vignettes clarify the nature of the relationship between cultural, familial and personal factors that influence the experience of illness.

Fluorinated quinazolones III: synthesis and CNS depressant activity of fluorinated quinazolone derivatives.

The synthesis of 2-allylthio-3-(4'-fluorophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-4-quinazolone, 2-n-propylthio-3-(4'-fluorophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-4-quinazolone, 3-(4'-bromophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrafluoro-2,4-quinazolinedithione, and seven fluorinated 2-alkyl/phenyl-3-aryl-4(3H)-quinazolones is described. The synthesized compounds were screened for CNS depressant activity using pentobarbital sleeping time, pentylenetetrazol convulsions, and condition avoidance test as the parameters. Most of the screened compounds exhibited significant depressant activity.

Collaborative preceptor training: a creative approach in tough times.

Rapid changes in the health care environment have challenged educators to find more efficient methods of developing nurses. These demands are leading to the use of collaborative approaches to education. Nurse educators have also found that they have to rely on preceptors for orientation of new employees. The Texas Medical Center Collaborative Preceptor Program was developed in 1989 to prepare nursing preceptors for all nine participating institutions. The goals of the program were to increase efficient use of instructor time, standardize preceptor preparation in the Texas Medical Center, and offer more programs and prepare more nurses per year than each individual institution could do alone. There were many unexpected benefits as well, and future plans for collaboration are already being formulated.

The efflux of nor-epinephrine from platelets in genetic hypertension.

Platelets have been used as a model of sympathetic neurons to study the storage of nor-adrenaline in normotensive individuals belonging to families with essential hypertension for at least two generations. The efflux and initial efflux rate (K) of noradrenaline was determined in 36 young relatives (mean age 29.2 years) and in 20 young controls with no family history of hypertension (mean age 26.5 years). From the groups of relatives all those with definite hypertension had been excluded. Efflux and efflux rate K was significantly higher in young relatives (50.82 +/- 3.84 and 28.2 +/- 6.3) than in the controls (39.2 +/- 0.71 and 15.2 +/- 4.8). Of the relatives 25.2% had higher K values than any of the controls.
