Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita is a congenital syndrome characterized by multiple contractures, rigid joints, and significant limitation of movement. Intervention, beginning in infancy, requires a comprehensive, holistic, family-centered approach. Long-range goals include achieving maximum range-of-motion and independence in accomplishing activities of daily living. Nursing care must address the developmental, physical, and emotional needs of the child as well as the psychologic concerns and educational needs of parents. The nurse acts as the coordinator of care to assure that the child receives all necessary services, including therapy, social services, and community support. Collaboration between nurse, parents, and other health care providers is crucial to the development and implementation of a long-term therapeutic plan of care which will enhance mobility and independence.

Models of nursing care in a changing environment: current challenges and future directions.

The last decade of health care in America has been characterized by elements that converged to mandate the need for restructuring health care delivery, which included rising costs, the prospective payment system, consumer expectations, patient care monitoring, the quality movement, and the nursing shortage. This changing environment has resulted in an array of nursing care delivery models to restructure care to assure quality of care, patient satisfaction, and cost containment. Some of the models include paired practice, case management, patient-focused care, cross-training, and product line management. To meet the challenges of future health care delivery, nurses need to be aware of predicted future trends: decreasing specialization of health care personnel, flexibility of the traditional nursing role, increased community-based care, and expanded roles for nurses.

Part 2. Osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), the most common genetic disorder of bone, is characterized by frequent, unpredictable fractures of the long bones with progressive skeletal deformity. Often diagnosed in the early years of life, OI requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary plan of care involving patient, family, and community. The nurse's role as caregiver, educator, and patient advocate is to foster normal physical and psychosocial growth and development and minimize the opportunity for fracture.

Postoperative patient-controlled analgesia in children.

Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) has been found to be an effective method of pain management for adults. Children are now being considered for self-administration of analgesia. With careful patient selection and preparation, nurses and children find patient-controlled analgesia to be an effective way to maintain comfort in the postoperative period.

Resume writing and interviewing skills for getting the job you want.

Getting the nursing position you want is a highly competitive endeavor in today's health care environment. Knowing how to market yourself can make the difference between being hired and being overlooked. Two crucial elements of a successful job search are resume writing and interviewing. The purpose of a resume is to pique the interest of the reader and secure a job interview. The interview then provides a platform for the candidate to highlight his or her achievements and convince the employer that he/she is the best choice for the position. Resume development and interviewing must be approached with skill and knowledge. A well-written resume followed by a well-executed interview gives the candidate a strong advantage in obtaining the position he/she wants.
