[Predictive value of a questionnaire for epidemiologic studies].

Combined surgical treatment was carried out in 29 cases of non-organ retroperitoneal tumors due to extensive involvement of adjacent organs. Postoperative mortality was 3.4 +/- 3.3%. Three-year survival was 51.2 +/- 10.3% and 5-year survival-47.1 +/- 10.10%.

[Increased risk factors for the occurrence of bladder cancer].

Risk factors of bladder cancer development were studied in a population-based case-control epidemiological study performed in Moscow. Relative risk (RR) indexes appeared to be increased in smokers (4.2) and ex-smokers (3.5) with statistically significant trends for two most important factors such as duration of smoking and duration of withdrawal. A pronounced although insignificant increase in the RR indexes was established for drivers (3.0) and a slight insignificant rise-for gas arc welding operators (1.5). The indexes were increased in subjects with a family history of cancer. The relative risk of cancer was significantly lower in beta-carotene consumers. A preventive effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids and oil and margarine used for frying was established. Risk of bladder cancer tended to increase with a rise in dietary protein. A dose-effect type inhibition of advancement of the disease by vitamin C was observed.

[ESR of adsorbed chlorophyll a].

Oxygen and water vapour effect on the dark ESR signal of chlorophyll a adsorbed on silica in vacuum has been studied. It has been determined that when O2 and H2O are absent chlorophyll a adsorption is accompanied by an increase of the paramagnetic states portion (PSP) of the pigment. The PSP is increasing when oxygen is admitted. Water vapour does not increase the PSP of the adsorbed chlorophyll a. It has been supposed that the ESR signal of chlorophyll a in solution belongs to the chlorophyll-oxygen complex and that any strengthening of the pi-pi-interactions results in intensification of the ESR signal. It has been concluded that the ESR signal of adsorbed chlorophyll a belongs to the charge transfer complex of the molecular oxygen and the chlorophyll aggregate with strong pi-pi-interactions.

[Human histamine and serotonin levels during neuro-emotional stress].

Levels of histamine and serotonin in blood of test subjects kept on a Salyut space diet were measured during their simulated rise to an altitude of 8,000 m, anticipation of an exposure to acceleration, and mental work. During simulated rise the level of histamine increased and histaminopectic activity of serum decreased. During anticipation of centrifugation the serotonin concentration grew. Levels of histamine and serotonin did not vary significantly in the test subjects kept on the space diet with certain food supplements.
