Patients with various forms of cerebral circulation impairment were examined. The changes of evoked truncal acoustic potentials (ETAP) point to a lesion of the brain stem formations predominantly at a mesencephalic level. It has been shown that ETAP correlate with the neurological symptomatology.
Thirty patients with acutely developed intracranial hematomas of traumatic and nontraumatic origin were subjected to a combined examination. In all cases, cerebral angiography was performed and evoked auditory trunk potentials were studied. Comparison of the resultant findings with the data from a clinical-neurologic and echoencephalographic examinations and also with pathomorphological evidence made it possible to identify new diagnostic criteria for determining an acute dislocation syndrome at the temporal-tentorial level, particularly for the purpose of detecting cerebral infiltrations.
The article reports on the first study of the evoked activity of the brain in epileptic patients (n = 20) following sleep deprivation. An analysis of the data obtained has revealed a tendency to the shortening of the peak latent intervals of visual evoked potentials in the range of 100-200 mu sec and the V component and the interpeak interval III-V of evoked auditory trunk potentials in patients with temporal epilepsy. The phenomenon may indicate the elimination of stabilizing control involving the specific conductive pathways and, possibly, an accelerated conduction of a specific sensor signal.
Up to now there has been a general consensus in the literature that the development of the comatose state is attended with the appearance on the EEG of high amplitude slow activity. The article shows that the acute period of coma is not always associated with this regularity. A large part of the EBG presents low amplitude irregular activity with occasional rapid fluctuations. In some cases there are phenomena characteristic of the physiological nocturnal sleep. The data obtained make it possible to consider the role of different synchronizing and desynchronizing cerebral systems in the genesis of electrical activity in the period of coma and are of certain interest in terms of studying the neurophysiological mechanisms of comatose states.

An examination of the topographic distribution of evoked visual potential over the scalp after a brain concussion revealed a pronounced disturbance of the regular changes of the amplitude-temporal characteristics of nonspecific components in most patients. A diminution or an increase of the amplitude of the N2 component in the specific projection zone and an increase of the amplitude of the N3 component in the non-specific zone were noted, and so was an increase of the latent period of the P3N3 and P4N4 components in all deflections. The changes revealed point to a disturbance of the functional relations between the specific and nonspecific systems of the brain as a result of craniocerebral injury.

The method of stem auditory evoked potential was used in the examination of 39 patients with tumors of the posterior cranial fossa of various localization. The time indices of the response were analysed: the peak latency of components I, III, and V and interpeak I-III, III-V, and I-V intervals. The most coarse disorders were revealed in patients with tumors of the cerebellopontile angle (100% of cases), which were clearly lateralized. Changes of stem auditory evoked potential in patients with cerebellar tumors were encountered somewhat less frequently (in up to 90%) and the response was asymmetric in most cases. As compared to the first group, however, a high percentage of disorders of component V to stimulation of the intact side was noted. Among patients with median localization of the tumor (vermis cerebelli, floor of fourth ventricle) changes were found in 62% of cases (component V). No authentic differences to stimulation of different sides were revealed. The authors discuss problems on the levels of occurrence of disorders of stem auditory evoked potential in patients with lesions of posterior cranial fossa structures.
The functional status of the brain stem was assessed by recording evoked stem auditory potentials (ESAP) in 76 patients in the acute period of arterial aneurysm rupture. Abnormalities of ESAP were detected in 39.4% of the patients. The determinant of ESAP disorder in aneurysm rupture is the occlusive-dislocation syndrome caused by intracranial hematoma, more than 50 ml in volume, ventricular tamponade or extensive vascular spasm.
Acoustic truncal evoked potentials (ATEP) were studied in 24 patients in the first 48 hours after concussion of the brain. The absolute peak latency of components 1, 3, and 5, the interpeak intervals 1-3, 3-5, and 1-5, and the interaural difference were determined. The results were compared with those of examination of a control group of 24 healthy individuals. Individual and group appraisal failed to reveal any significant differences from normal values in none of the studied parameters in patients with brain concussion. The informativeness of the method in mild craniocerebral trauma is discussed.
