Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has become an increasingly important health problem worldwide. This review focuses on its cardiac complications. The key elements in the clinical syndrome are the opportunistic infections and the cancer that occur as a by-product of the immunodeficiency process. However, as early diagnosis, aggressive therapy and better supportive care become increasingly available, with consequently longer survival rates, cardiac lesions other than those due to opportunistic infections or malignancy should be seen. Cardiac complications are described in terms of the pathologic lesions, the clinical manifestations that ensue as a result of the pathologic lesions and the cardiac abnormalities that can occur from administration of the various therapeutic agents in the syndrome.
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is becoming an increasingly important public health problem. This article concerns the pulmonary complications of AIDS, both infectious and neoplastic. After a brief historical introduction, the pathophysiologic mechanisms are presented, followed by a description of the clinical manifestations of AIDS and its pulmonary complications.
The utility and limitations of radionuclide imaging in coronary artery disease are presented. Rationale for its usage is discussed in terms of pathophysiologic alterations of the heart and how the pharmacologic properties of these radiopharmaceutical agents can be used advantageously for assessment of such alterations.
Cardiac nuclear imaging is recognized as a relatively safe and reliable noninvasive technique. Various parameters of cardiac function can be analyzed during rest and exercise, thus making it an important adjunct in the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease.
