Epidemiology of nickel allergy.

In 2400 consecutive patients at 8 clinics in 5 countries, nickel hypersensitivity was found in 176 cases (7.3%), 19 male (2.1%) and 157 female (10.5%). The incidence ranged from 15 to 38 cases in 300 patients of every department (5.0% Sofia to 12.7% Erfurt). 60.6% of the nickel positives were schoolgirls or younger than 25 years. The exposure time was 3 years, in 49% 1 year or shorter. Most cases (75%) are not occupationally acquired, but due to costume jewelry (31.8%), wrist watches (23.3%), metal clothing buckles (3.4%) including jeans buttons. Job dependent nickel dermatitis is often (36/51 cases) linked with wet work. Atopic dermatitis was found in 8.3% of female nickel allergy. Nickel positivity without a dermatitis history was seen in 9/176 cases (5%). Nickel allergy will become a sex-indifferent phenomenon in Europe, because of the changing customs of adornment.

Dermatitis, Contact

Sacroiliac joints in chronic dermatoses.

In 34 patients with different chronic skin diseases (including eczemas, lichen ruber, erythrodermia, pyodermia, pemphigus erythematosus, vasculitis, parapsoriasis varioliformis, scleroderma adultorum Buschke, prophyria cutanea tarda, rosacea, dermatomyositis, erythematodes chronicus discoides and indurative tuberculosis), X-ray studies revealed sacroiliac-changes consistent with a low-grade inflammation. This oteoarthritis slightly differs from the patterns disclosed earlier by the same authors in psoriatic patients, lacking any clinical bone or joint symptoms. So far, it has not been possible to explain their nature, cause or development.

Adult

[Chloracne, porphyria cutanea tarda, and other poisonings due to the herbicides].

In 80 industrial workers producing herbicides (2,4,5-trichlorphenoxyaceticacidsodium and sodiumpentachlorphenolate) in Czechoslovakia the following signs of intoxication caused by 2,3,6,7-tetrachlordibenzodioxin were found: Dermatological: Chloracne and Porphyria cutanea tarda. Internal: Disorders of the metabolism of porphyrins, fats, carbohydrates, plasmaproteins. Neurological: Mainly lesions of the peripheral neurone. Psychiatric: Neurasthenic syndrome and organic lesions. Differences from the usual course of chloracne were observed. Porphyria cutanea tarda acquisita was most obvious, one patient suffered and died from severe atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes. Many patients developed polyneuropathy, as verified both by EMG and autopsy. Two patients died from bronchogenic carcinoma.
