Two patients with a history of progressive unilateral neurological symptoms and signs, and evidence of obstructive hydrocephalus from a mass lesion adjacent to the third ventricle as demonstrated by pneumography, were each found to have an intracerebral hematoma secondary to remote hemorrhage from a small vascular malformation. One patient died shortly after surgical exploration and the other after ventriculography. The pathophysiology of hydrocephalus associated with a vascular malformation is discussed and the need for considering a benign cause for obstructive hydrocephalus from a mass deep in the brain substance is emphasized.
The restriction map of plasmid pIP1433 from Campylobacter coli BM2509, isolated in France, was constructed and the location of the kanamycin (Km) and tetracycline (Tc) resistance markers determined using probes for aphA-3 and tetO genes, respectively. These DNA probes were used to study a second Km- and Tc-resistant strain C. coli UA696, isolated in Canada. In this strain, the Km resistance determinant was located in the chromosome. Like pIP1433, the Km resistance determinant in C. coli UA696 specified a 3'-aminoglycoside phosphotransferase of type III whereas the tetO gene was located on a non-transmissible plasmid.
This psychobiological study investigates married-coupled group psychotherapy from pre- and postsession serum dopamine dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) determinations, the Free Association Test (FAT), and a Postsession Questionnaire (PSQ). Experimental manipulations permit controls for the assessment of DBH variations. Group, gender, and individual linear regression analyses are interpreted by a stressor-destrssor typology. DBH levels significantly increase during psychotherapy. Increments are comparable with those from physical work. Most variability in DBH is predicted from a small set of psychological variables. Psychological stressors and destressors show psychobiochemical individuality. Implications of psychological stressors for psychosomatic vulnerability are discussed.
