A longitudinal study of the emergence of phonemes in children with Down syndrome.

Articulation norms are typically used to measure sound acquisition and mastery in children with Down syndrome. The present longitudinal study examines the clinical records of 60 children with Down syndrome to evaluate phoneme acquisition and emergence. Results document the order of emergence of sounds in children with Down syndrome. Factors affecting emergence of sounds (e.g. oral motor skills) and difficulties in using a mastery model to evaluate speech sound acquisition in children with Down syndrome are explored. Clinical as well as research implications of the data are presented.

Intelligibility of speech in children with Down syndrome in natural settings: parents' perspective.

Data collected from 937 parent questionnaires regarding intelligibility of speech in children with Down syndrome were analyzed. Intelligibility was a wide-spread problem. Parents reported evidence of difficulties classified as oral motor skills, motor programming skills, and specific speech skills. Children experienced greater difficulty with sentences and in conversation than with single words. Intelligibility problems were more frequent when the child was conversing with unfamiliar adults. The implications of these findings for clinical assessment and remediation are discussed.

A survey of speech and language pathology services for Down syndrome: state of the art.

This article summarizes current trends in speech and language pathology services to individuals with Down syndrome. Data was collected through the use of a questionnaire mailed to speech and language pathologists who regularly serve clients with Down syndrome. Most widely used assessment instruments, therapy materials, sources of information, and need for materials to be developed are presented as they relate to services for birth-3 year olds, 3-5 year olds, school-age-14 year olds, prevocational-18 year olds, and above-age-18 adult services. The discussion addresses specific needs for research and needed direction for evaluation and treatment with the Down syndrome population.

Functional method for assessing oral perceptual skills in children.

An alternative method for assessing oral perceptual skills was developed to address some of the practical limitations of the standard form test. The alternate forms and standard NIH Oral Stereognostic Forms were administered to 182 children. Scores resulting from presentation of standard NIH forms and alternate edibles correlated .76. Suggestions for using the alternate forms for routine oral stereognostic testing are presented.

Learning disabilities existing concomitantly with communication disorder.

This article describes the characteristics of language disorders that occur with learning disabilities. In this context, formal and naturalistic language, including specific standardized test batteries and curriculum-based language assessment, portfolio assessment, and others, are discussed. In addition, service delivery models and interventions that focus on the enhancement of semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic development are presented. Finally, future directions for research in the area of learning disabilities and secondary language disorders are suggested. Intervention strategies, including supportive scaffolding, whole language, and collaborative consultation, are reviewed; and implications for language assessment, intervention, and future research are discussed.
