Igniting homogeneous nucleation.

Transient homogeneous nucleation is studied in the limit of large critical sizes. Starting from pure monomers, three eras of transient nucleation are characterized in the classic Becker-Döring kinetic equations with two different models of discrete diffusivity: the classic Turnbull-Fisher formula and an expression describing thermally driven growth of the nucleus. The latter diffusivity yields time lags for nucleation which are much closer to values measured in experiments with disilicate glasses. After an initial stage in which the number of monomers decreases, many clusters of small size are produced and a continuous size distribution is created. During the second era, nucleii are increasing steadily in size in such a way that their distribution appears as a wave front advancing towards the critical size for steady nucleation. The nucleation rate at critical size is negligible during this era. After the wave front reaches critical size, it ignites the creation of supercritical clusters at a rate that increases monotonically until its steady value is reached. Analytical formulas for the transient nucleation rate and the time lag are obtained that improve classical ones and compare very well with direct numerical solutions.

Oscillatory wave fronts in chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators.

Wave front pinning and propagation in damped chains of coupled oscillators are studied. There are two important thresholds for an applied constant stress F: for |F| F(cs) (static Peierls stress) there are only stable moving wave fronts. For piecewise linear models, extending an exact method of Atkinson and Cabrera's to chains with damped dynamics corroborates this description. For smooth nonlinearities, an approximate analytical description is found by means of the active point theory. Generically for small or zero damping, stable wave front profiles are nonmonotone and become wavy (oscillatory) in one of their tails.

Edge dislocations in crystal structures considered as traveling waves in discrete models.

The static stress needed to depin a 2D edge dislocation, the lower dynamic stress needed to keep it moving, its velocity, and displacement vector profile are calculated from first principles. We use a simplified discrete model whose far field distortion tensor decays algebraically with distance as in the usual elasticity. Dislocation depinning in the strongly overdamped case (including the effect of fluctuations) is analytically described. N parallel edge dislocations whose average interdislocation distance divided by the Burgers vector of a single dislocation is L>>1 can depin a given one if N=O(L). Then a limiting dislocation density can be defined and calculated in simple cases.

Free-boundary problems describing two-dimensional pulse recycling and motion in semiconductors.

An asymptotic analysis of the Gunn effect in two-dimensional samples of bulk n GaAs with circular contacts is presented. A moving pulse far from contacts is approximated by a moving free boundary separating regions where the electric potential solves a Laplace equation with subsidiary boundary conditions. The dynamical condition for the motion of the free boundary is a Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We obtain the exact solution of the free-boundary problem (FBP) in simple one-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries. The solution of the FBP is obtained numerically in the general case and compared with the numerical solution of the full system of equations. The agreement is excellent so that the FBP can be adopted as the basis for an asymptotic study of the multidimensional Gunn effect.

Three eras of micellization.

Micellization is the precipitation of lipids from aqueous solution into aggregates with a broad distribution of aggregation number. Three eras of micellization are characterized in a simple kinetic model of Becker-Döring type. The model assigns the same constant energy to the (k-1) monomer-monomer bonds in a linear chain of k particles. The number of monomers decreases sharply and many clusters of small size are produced during the first era. During the second era, nuclei are increasing steadily in size until their distribution becomes a self-similar solution of the diffusion equation. Lastly, when the average size of the nuclei becomes comparable to its equilibrium value, a simple mean-field Fokker-Planck equation describes the final era until the equilibrium distribution is reached.

Effects of disorder on the wave front depinning transition in spatially discrete systems.

Pinning and depinning of wave fronts are ubiquitous features of spatially discrete systems describing a host of phenomena in physics, biology, etc. A large class of discrete systems is described by overdamped chains of nonlinear oscillators with nearest-neighbor coupling and subject to random external forces. The presence of weak randomness shrinks the pinning interval and it changes the critical exponent of the wave front depinning transition from 1/2 to 3/2. This effect is derived by means of a recent asymptotic theory of the depinning transition, extended to discrete drift-diffusion models of transport in semiconductor superlattices and is confirmed by numerical calculations.

Axisymmetric pulse recycling and motion in bulk semiconductors.

The Kroemer model for the Gunn effect in a circular geometry (Corbino disks) has been numerically solved. The results have been interpreted by means of asymptotic calculations. Above a certain onset dc voltage bias, axisymmetric pulses of the electric field are periodically shed by an inner circular cathode. These pulses decay as they move towards the outer anode, which they may not reach. As a pulse advances, the external current increases continuously until a new pulse is generated. Then the current abruptly decreases, in agreement with existing experimental results. Depending on the bias, more complex patterns with multiple pulse shedding are possible.

Two-dimensional oscillatory patterns in semiconductors with point contacts.

Planar samples of n-GaAs with attached point contacts at different dc voltages may display a variety of spatiotemporal patterns arising from the dynamics of curved charge dipole waves. Patterns rank from oscillations due to recycling and motion of simple quasiplanar or cylindrical wave fronts to more complex patterns that include merging and splitting of different fronts. Results of numerical simulations are interpreted by means of simple one-dimensional asymptotic theories.

Motion of wave fronts in semiconductor superlattices.

An analysis of wave front motion in weakly coupled doped semiconductor superlattices is presented. If a dimensionless doping is sufficiently large, the superlattice behaves as a discrete system presenting front propagation failure and the wave fronts can be described near the threshold currents J(i) (i=1,2) at which they depin and move. The wave front velocity scales with current as |J-J(i)|(1/2). If the dimensionless doping is low enough, the superlattice behaves as a continuum system and wave fronts are essentially shock waves whose velocity obeys an equal area rule.

Wave front depinning transition in discrete one-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems.

Pinning and depinning of wave fronts are ubiquitous features of spatially discrete systems describing a host of phenomena in physics, biology, etc. A large class of discrete systems is described by overdamped chains of nonlinear oscillators with nearest-neighbor coupling and controlled by constant external forces. A theory of the depinning transition for these systems, including scaling laws and asymptotics of wave fronts, is presented and confirmed by numerical calculations.

Dynamic scenarios of multistable switching in semiconductor superlattices.

We analyze the dynamics of charge distributions in weakly coupled, doped, dc voltage biased semiconductor superlattices subject to voltage steps of different sizes. Qualitatively different current responses to voltage switching processes have been observed experimentally. We explain them by invoking distinct scenarios for electric-field domain formation, validated by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we investigate the transient from an unstable to a stable point in the current-voltage characteristics after a steplike or ramplike increase of the external voltage.

Chaotic motion of space charge wave fronts in semiconductors under time-independent voltage bias.

A standard drift-diffusion model of space charge wave propagation in semiconductors has been studied numerically and analytically under dc voltage bias. For sufficiently long samples, appropriate contact resistivity, and applied voltage-such that the sample is biased in a regime of negative differential resistance-we find chaos in the propagation of nonlinear fronts (charge monopoles of alternating sign) of electric field. The chaos is always low dimensional, but has a complex spatial structure; this behavior can be interpreted using a finite-dimensional asymptotic model in which the front (charge monopole) positions and the electrical current are the only dynamical variables.
