The interactive videodisc.

Dynamic audiovisual presentations that are interactive due to the use of videodisc systems provide more efficient and effective communication of those elements of medicine best learned by seeing them, than is possible via traditional modes. This is particularly true when externally interfaced electronic data processors are used to automate the process. While magnetic and stylus-type videodisc players can serve in education, it is the optical videodisc that has the greatest educational potential. The AMA has been exploring the capabilities of optical videodisc systems and demonstrating pilot programs that use good principles of audiovisual and computer-assisted instruction in tutorial formats or presented as patient management problems. We are on the threshold of a revolution in communication potentially as significant to education as the one which followed the invention of movable type. Using interactive videodisc programs, designed and produced with skill and care, we can solve some of medical education's most pressing problems.

Electronic processing of medical visual information.

The potential data base for electronic processing has recently been enlarged significantly to include static and dynamic visual information. Emergence of the videodisk and other technology now enables computer-assisted instruction to be audiovisual and audiovisual communication to be interactive. One consequence, now that audiovisual display has been wedded to computer systems, is that computer-assisted instruction (CAI) in many medical subjects should no longer be considered acceptable unless it includes pictorial data. Therefore, the computer scientist must now master the principles and become knowledgeable in the skills of audiovisual communication to cope successfully with the impending revolution in education and to make good use of the newly available technology. Similarly, in planning storage and retrieval systems, images must be considered as part of the data. This presentation traces the development of interactive multimedial self-instruction by describing the innovative functions that have appeared in equipment during the past 13 years culminating in the QuadraSync. The low cost of some of these devices encourages their adoption.

Meeting the challenges of new technology.

Bowman's metaphor of components of verbal language as description of visual language is explored. The elements making up the alphabet, vocabulary, and grammar of visual language are presented. Since more than 70% of learning is said to occur through visual communication, effective use of these components can lead to better learning.
