[Chronic constipation and its treatment].

Altogether 850 patients suffering from chronic constipation were examined. Of these, 80% only showed functional changes in the intestine, 5% lost the defecation reflex, and 15% manifested inflammation-induced lesions in the intestine. 80% of the patients demonstrated symptoms of dysbacteriosis. Multimodality treatment appeared to produce an appreciable effect in the majority of the patients. As a result many of the patients gave up laxatives.

Adult

[Incidence of meningococcal infection in the RSFSR].

The authors present characteristics of meningococcus infection epidemic process in case of sporadic cases and under epidemic conditions (1965--1976). A scheme of epidemiological analysis suggested by the authors permitted to differentiate and to record the incidence of various clinical forms of meningococcus infection, to present data on the age, seasonal characteristics, focality, etc. Comparison of intensive morbidity indices for 10 years, both at the individual administration territories and in the Republic as a whole demonstrated morbidity level of 1.5--2.0 to be one of prognostic signs of the beginning epidemic. The main features differentiating the sporadic and epidemic morbidity periods were revealed. The presence of group diseases, a greater percentage of children among those who fell ill, and marked signs of seasonality and territorial difference characterized the period of rise caused by meningococcus of serological group A.

[The effect of hemosorbents on the structure of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in man].

The effect of various hemosorbents (HS)--carbon and textile--on the structure of neutrophils has been studied in vitro. It has been shown that the mechanism of cell degranulation is universal on various HS and does not depend on the anticoagulant used or on blood donor diseases. The degree of degranulation both for primary and for secondary granules increases with the prolongation of blood contact with HS, directly depends on HS--blood ratio and is determined mainly by the type of HS: degranulation on textile HS is considerably greater than that on carbon HS. Degranulation was confirmed by elevated blood plasma concentration of lactoferrin, a specific marker of secondary neutrophil granules. It is suggested that cell degranulation on HS leading to a considerable posthemosorption increase in the blood plasma level of biologically active intracellular components is essential in the process responsible for correcting hemosorption effect in different diseases.

[Pharmacokinetics of human milk lactoferrin in intact mice and tumor-carrying animals].

Pharmacokinetics of iodine containing and native lactoferrin from human milk was studied in intact mice and the animals with Ehrlich ascites carcinoma. Both these antigens, native and I-lactoferrin, were similarly distributed in intact mice body. The same pharmacokinetics was found in tumor-bearing animals. Exogenous lactoferrin penetrated mainly into liver tissue, then simultaneously with bile--into small intestine and further into large intestine. Distinct accumulation of the glycoprotein was not found in tumor tissue.

[Problems in detection of mycoplasma contamination in cell cultures (author's transl)].

A total of 135 cell lines was examined for mycoplasma contamination using two techniques: isolation and specific DNA-staining with DAPI or "Hoechst 33258". The two techniques showed similar results in 64% of the cases of cell contamination while the remainder was detected only by one or the other techniques: 12,82% by the staining technique and 23% by the isolation technique, which shows that the 2 techniques are complementary. The staining technique is very quick, easy to execute, very sensitive, and should be the method of choice to detect contamination when the mycoplasma do not grow in acellular media.

[Absorption of essential amino acids in patients with chronic enteritis].

Continuous perfusion was applied in studying the absorption of essential amino acids in the duodenum and the proximal part of the jejunum in healthy persons and in patients with chronic enteritis of the land ii degrees of severity. All the patients demonstrated a reduced rate of absorption. The degree of the absorption derangement increased parallel with the severity of the affection. In the duodenum the absorption proceeded slower than in the upper portion of the jejunum.
